I am wanting to to a motor swap and put a 450 motor into my 400ex frame I know that it can be done and that people have done it, but I was wondering how hard it is and what you have to do to do it. Any frame modifications needed or anything else that has to be done. Anyinformation is a help. Thanks

it would be alot easier to buy a 450r and just mod that, if your really set on putting a 450 in your ex it can be done but it will need custom mounts and things like that, you will also have to fab somthing up for the radiator

you have to do alot of chopping and cuting on the frame to make a crf 450 motor work...just sell the ex take the money and make a DP on a 450r....the 05s are going pretty damn cheap now

i would like to buy a 450 but dont have enough money to buy it and mod it the way I would need to. My 400 is already got all the parts I need, so I figure putting the 450 motor in the frame would be the way to go money wise.

well the complete motor, carb, wiring harness, radiator is goin to set you back a good $1500 or more, and its goin to be alot of work, i would not recomend it if your not a Kick *** welder/fabricator, and really good at math, everythings gotta be perfect, most of the 450 swaps were done by pro machanics from well known companies. if you add up all the costs you could have close to enough cash to buy a decently moded 450r, just my opinion, you might think about putting a XR650L motor in it its been done and was said to be sum what easiy

well i look at it this way....if you can do EVERYTHING yourself...and you know what your doing and a good welder/fabricator go for it

but if you cant do it and you will have to get your frame converted i know eastcoast atv charges like 1000.00 for a 400ex/crf frame conversion.....not including repowercoating...so your looking at maybe another 100+ for powercoating....thats not including shipping to and from

then you have to find a motor....which can be pretty spendy....depending on whats doen to it and so on....you have to get a radiator, you have to get a new water pump, a wiring harness...its alot to do that conversion....

you might could run across a frame thats already been converted for a few hundred dollars and just slap the motor and shyt in...slap your parts off your 400ex on the frame....sell the not needed parts off your 400ex like the motor, wiring, and carb...and call it a day...

too much hassle for me imo....while im always up for a good challenge people are sellin modded 04 450rs pretty cheap for the 06's so i think i would sell the ex...take hte money you would use for the conversion...and take the money off the ex....and get a decently modded USED 04-05 450r

that sounds like a good idea because I love how comfy my 400 is it doesmt feel as narrow as 450's do also the 400ex frame is real nice just my opinion though

Yes there is some work, but can be done.
Must have access to the use of a welder.
Time,patience.and parts gathering.

I like mine! :D
