I made a name for this site since I just bought a 400ex project and had a few questions. I already own a Honda 250r That I have had for around a year now and love working on the bike so I bought a 1999 400ex that the tranmission went. I bought her for a thousand and cant wait to pick it up next weekend. I am most likley going to make it a XC (harescramble) race bike for the woods. As soon as I get the motor fixed or buy a new complete one is there anything that i really need to do before I get her ready for a woods race? Thanks a lot

wow if u wanna race the woods ur gonna have to do alot more than just motor.. ur gonna have to get nerf bars, skid plates, rims, tires(maxxis razr2, holeshot hd), shocks, and deff. a pipe...

I have some excelent shocks for trail riding!!! elka tripple rate rec series. awosem for trails!! I started mx and they are next to useless now. I have razar2's but not selling them, but I highly recomend them. super tough and long lasting. last way longer than a set of holshots that I had.

to set it up for a sweet woods bike you ll first need a new motor its not worth it to fix that one, you can pick one up for around 6 or 7 hundred bucks, put a nice 416 piston in it a hot cam stage one get it ported and get a good carb, edelbrock or FCR. get a FULL pipe HMF is a nice pipe, get an UNI air filter. thats about it for the motor, next get some suspention works are cheap and still work nice, get some 22" rear tires ( knarlys ) 23" fronts put them on HYPER bead locks, add some nerfs, hand guards and skids and you should be good

for the motor get a pipe maybe curtis sparks or hmf
tires and wheels razr 2 tires are nice and run stock wheels they are pretty strong
for shocks get some works tripple rates with resevoirs
for armor get either pro armor or prm front bumper thats my opinion though but they have nic xc bumpers get prm or pro armor skids and as for nerf bars get either the proarmor nerfs with the heel gaurd and pegs because your stock ones are probably wore and the powermadd hand gaurds are pretty nice thats what I got and get a uni air filter K&N doesn't perform as good in muddy conditions and some after market bars

what is really important is endurance you dont want your hands getting tired so lube your clutch and throttle cables and also oury grips are real soft I love them

Sorry guys but been there done that with all the works shocks. there junk. I have a pair of stock 450r shocks on my 250 that tear my works to peices and that is what I am planning on putting on my 400. the 400 is not stock either I guess I forgot to mention it has all the little bolt ons Nerfs, baja rims with holeshots gusseted frame with 250r subframe, bumper, grab bar, hmf slipper, airfilter.. just little things.. I am not a total noob at the whole race thing I have been racing my R since the middle of this season in MX But I also want to run some local harescrambles but I need to get a new pair of plastics since the ones that are on the bike now are race cut. I dont really feel like eating mud the whole race if you guys know what I mean.

As for the grips sorry but I only run Spyder Medium grips. Stuff that is soft usually just runs me out more then harder ones.. As for clutch and throttle they will get new cables and a MSR easy pull clutcher. I am planning on getting the bike ready for next year anyways..

Then for the person who told me the motor is not worth fixing I think you may be right also. I am thinking of looking around for a nice 416 or 426 to just throw in. But we will see how it comes out. My 250 comes first as for parts concerns

Thanks for all the replying.. I am going to need all the help I can get on this bike. I never built anything of a woods racing bike but I have a pretty good idea on what I am going for

As for my name 400exrider707 knows what it means.. Ever since I started racing I really only compete against yfz's and 450r's so I thought the name would fit nicely. I am just wondering why you are so worried about my name and not one thing useful out of your whole post

:p

416s seem to be a favorite around here. i have a 440 and i love the power but i would have liked to build my self a 416. the 440 is a good woods motor because it has lots of low end torque.

Build yourself a 416,They rev higher then the 440 and if built right have decent amount of low end and monster mid-top

if you just won;t a lot of low end get a hmf quiet race series pipe for good low end and like you said bore your engine to a 416 and you'l be set for the motor
all I got for the motor is a pipe but thats you I think all you need is shocks and good tires and handgaurds and some othe minor stuff but all the other stuff sounds good so far
