i have both 400ex and 250r and my 250 which is back to stock now will walk all over my 400ex ...it took me a few weeks to get everything on the 250r motor wise in sync but since i have i have had no problems and it is as reliable as my 400. as far as the frame goes i have been pretty rough with mine and have not had any problems you shouldnt either juss be sure and check the frame over really good before you buy and make sure there is no BS if u can i would also ride it or let him ride it and make sure the motor is all alright but other than that i say go for it u wont be dissappointed especially with a lil money and tlc a 250r can be a very sweet bike

i agree with motochamp. R's get a bad name from some people for beign unreliable, or breaking a lot. i have a feeling they just dont maintain them. i have a 310 with a stock frame and i ride the snot out of the bike. im always screaming it, ive tapped trees pretty good ive rolled it pretty good. frames straight motor lasts forever. an R is a very good reliable bike if you just take a little time to get it set up. you will have to pay attention to jetting more than on a 400ex and you do need to be sure to always warm it up. but if you take care of an R a little bit you shouldnt have any trouble with it.

Personally, I wouldnt buy a 250r with stock shocks. Spend a little more money and buy one with aftermarkets..

Most of the 250R stock shocks are wore out by this time....they are basically the same shock as the 400EX.....I had a 400EX and now have a 250R and I am waiting on a new 06 450R......but the 250R runs circles around my 400......when I ride my old 400 now...that my buddy has...I feel like i'm riding a 300EX....if the 250R is built right it will run very well....but they are more maintanence than a 4 stroke.....that is the only drawback.....and if you are gonna trail ride and poke along don't bother buying one......cause they are meant to be run.....thats just my 2 cents

Hey lonestar, PM me on paatving when you get that 06 450 and let me know how it performs compared to your 250. I am still stuck deciding between a 450r or a 250r.
