I owned a 2001 until last year, when I sold it....:( to buy a bike. What a mistake that was! Now the bike is getting ready to be sold, and I want another quad.........I'm deciding between two quads, one of them being an 06' 400ex.
Being a long time 400ex owner, I really liked the reliability, and durability of mine, and never really had problems with it other than normal wear and tear items like bearings and such. Everyone keeps asking why I don't consider a 450r or YFZ, but the maintenance routine scares me away from them. I am a Technician 40hrs+ a week, and like to take it easy on the wrenches at home. I want to have fun. I usually enter local events in Expert Class, but never felt that I NEEDED more power than what it offered with a slip on and jetting and intake mods, and never felt that I rode it to it's absolute full potential. It always had more than I did!:p

What are your reasons for being on one?

IMO the 400 ex is the best handling quad out there besides a 250R.

I shyed away from the 450 for the same reasons you stated. I'm very happy with my 400.

Me personaly i like how mine is in the air no matter how i leave the lip i can always correct it i cant do that on a 450. I just like the power delivery not that theres a lot its just smooth. There are other little things. But when it comes down to it on the track its all rider.

I know you said you're looking at an 06, but one of the best things about the 400ex is you can find them very cheap used. They are probably the best bang for your buck used.

I like mine because it handles realllly good. I have had a trx125, a 250ex and a blaster so when I got my 400 I couldn't believe how good it handled. Awesome power too! I rode a 450r right after I got my 400 and its wicked fast but it just doesn't feel as stable as my 400 and I ride my little nephews around alot they are 7 and 2 so I want something that is safe for me to ride them on but has alot of power. Super reliable too I think you can literally shoot the powerplant with a 22 and it won't hurt it. I think the only problem I have had is, axle bearings, timing chain wore out, and the oil tank broke when I broke the drainplug loose. But the guy that had it before me DID NOT take care of it by no means. Later

If you buy a 400ex, buy a torque wrench........The oil tank bolt needs 14ft/lbs of torque, that's not much.........And the prime reason for oil tank failures.;) Most people wayyy overtighten them.
