I have built each of these motors befor but never with the same compression, cam, carb, or porting and trying to find out how much of a difference 1mm makes using the same compression. this will be the last 400 motor I build for myself (my son starts racing with the big boys soon) and this one is going to scream.

a lot is going to depend on the piston, pipe, cam, etc you run. out of the builds i have done, i liked the 426 best. 416 was really nice too. the 440 is great with a lot of low end power but it doesn't rev as high. the 406's are nice upgrades from stock that seemed to be very reliable.

I don't think there's there's a big hp difference in the displacement, all the power comes from the head, cam, carb, compression, and exhuast....matching each of them perfectly is the key.......I had a stock bore 400ex with a full race port head, web cam, fcr39mm carb wb e-series pro meg exhaust, that would run circles around the 416 in my signature.

A nicely (correctly) built 440 will hang with the 450's.

Too many variables to be able to take any kind of guess.

NO their ave not that many variables I am trying to find out if I built one motor and just swapped out cyl and piston and rejetted what the hp difference will be. To make it a little simpler I an building a 400 for my son and it needs all the speed I can get out of it, it has cam, porting,+1500 ignition, hardweld crank, carrillo rod, pro circut exhaust and a few other goodies an I don't know which cc to go with. I will most likely go with a 426 and save the 440 cyl that I have til spring when the next race season starts.

Go with the 406cc. That's what I have and I can keep with the 450's. The trick is the high velocity porting I have done, It is great!! I'm pretty sure that theres only fractions of difference between different bores that have same stock compression. Just like you said you get your power from everything else. New air box, carb, good exhaust will help alot! I have a 39mm fcr and love it, my bike has instant throttle responce and is fast as sh*t!
