New Clutch..when??

Hey anyone know what the main indications are that it's time to put a new clutch in?? My machine is a 93 and I seriously doubt the kid I bought it from did anything more than fill it with gas!! When I take off in first or 2nd, it appears to slip. I don't know if it's just a cable adjustment or if it's time to replace the clutch.
