I haven't heard too much about advanced timing keys, what are they, what do they do, how much are they and how much gain is possible. any help would be appreciated. thank you

the advance timing key like the name said advance your timing (sparks) and increase your throttle response.Sparks don't recommend it for a big bore.Your bike will run a little hotter with the key

Your piston compresses your fuel/air mixture before the sparkplug ignites it. The sparkplug fires at a specific time. Too early, and you get detonation. Too late, and you lose power because it doesn't burn fuel/air efficiently.

So the question becomes, how does your sparkplug know when to fire?

Your flywheel is directly connected to your crankshaft. There is a small bump on the outside of your flywheel that tells the CDI when to fire the sparkplug. There is a small "key" between the crankshaft and flywheel that won't let your flywheel slip and twist on your crankshaft.

Now, it's not really "one" specific point that your sparkplug can fire. You actually have a small range, depending on your compression, engine tempurature, and specific power requirement.

The timing key moves your flywheel fowards just a tiny bit, so your spark occurs just a little sooner. This gives better throttle response and a more efficient burn, but can cause a little extra heat. It's fine on the stock engine, but not recommended for high compression or big-bore kits.
