im asking this for my friend cause hes to stubborn to find out the problem.. well 1st let me give u an overveiw of his bike.. its an 04 400ex and it looks like it could be 10 years old, his fenders are cracked and flopping everywhere and its maybe been cleaned 5 times in over a year.. but anwyays a few times he ridden w/o and air filter.. lol i know incredibly stupid, but anyways he said he has to use his choke to start it every time(i have mine for a few months left and rarely use mine unless its 30 degrees) even when its hot, and his jetting is fine so thats not a prob, i think its a dirty carb cause the dumbass rode w/o the airfilter.. any other suggestions of what it could be???

Our 400ex's were cold natured like that at first. They fouled plugs right and left trying to start them cold... A 42mm pilot jet seems to fix it.

have your friend clean his carb if that dosent work then go from there and try something else.

what kd5sfq said, up the pilot jet size to a 42 which should make it start a lot easier cold... and tell that meathead to clean the carb and run an air filter.
