Man you guys get some crazy jackpots . Highest I've ever seen around here was like maybe 30 million .

If someone would win the 250 million , how much out of that would the IRS take ?? I know you guys get taxed one your winnings , which really sucks , but I'm sure you still walk away with a huge smile .

first, if you win the jackpot and decide to take a lump sum, powerball will take a large portion of it...i think the 250 million jackpot winner from a few years ago got like 170 million...and uncle sam doesnt automatically take a chunk of your winnings, but you will have to pay income tax on it, and for that level of income i believe the rate is 36%, which would leave you with about 108,800,000. Still not too bad.

Thanks for the info . Yeah I guess I could live with 108 million . I really wouldn't have much good use for the other 142 million... unless you concider using $100 bills to light a nice big cuban cigar as good use . :devil:

how many balls and how many numbers are there possible, i would think therre is only a couple tens millions of different combinations. Might make sense to take out a loan for 100 million and just hope no one else hits it so you dont have to split.

Let's say you have two sets of numbers, each labeled 0-9. How many possible combinations are there? Logic says that you can get anything from 00-99, so a total of 100 combinations.

How do you figure this out mathematically? Total possible combinations of #1, multiplied by total possible combinations of #2. 10*10=100

How about if you have only one set of numbers 0-9, but you pick two of them out? Well, you can get the same 100 combinations, minus all the double numbers like 00, 11, 22, ect. There are 10 doubles, so 100-10=90 possible combinations.

How does it go mathematically? Possibilities for #1 (10 balls), multiplied by possibilites for #2 (9 balls left after 1 is taken out): 10*9=90.

If you have 56 balls, and you are pulling 5 of them out, you have 56 possible for the first ball, 55 possible for the second, 54 possible for the third, ect.

So, wouldn't your odds of winning be 1 out of 458 million to match the 5 of 56? But they are claiming it's only 1 in 3.9 million.

Add the last ball, 1 out of 46, so you have 458,377,920*46 to give you a total of 1 out of 21 billion for the Mega Millions?

Yes wilkin, that is how you do it, except i think they draw from different bins, all with the same number of balls in it (56 maybe?)

Its just like flipping quarter, you have a 1/2 chance of guessing right. So if you did it 10 times, you would have a 1 in 1024 chance of guessing right 10 times in a row.

Now that I think about it, I bet they don't have to be in order. That changes your odds considerably.

For 5 numbers, that would cut odds by 5! (5 factorial, equal to 5*4*3*2*1=120)

458 million divided by 120=3.8 million.
