I drag race alot around were I live and a couple are coming up here in a month and I want to get ready. I was wandering if a 14th sprocket would do many any good to change to and if anyone has any other advice on stuff I could do to my 400EX please let me know, Thanks

I've heard that the 16 tooth front sprocket works pretty well...I ran 14/39 on mine once and got alright results on a 300 foot track. I ran a 5.108 I think...

How long is the track you race at?

You definatly don't want to put a 16t on the front if you are running stock tires and rear sprocket. That would give you a higher top end and slower acceleration (not great for drag racing). My son uses a 14t front and starts in second gear. He has stock rear tires and stock rear sprocket. Seems to work for him.

Exactly what jshtex said! Do Not use a 16t for drag racing!! I tried it with my 416 and it is NO GOOD!!! Besides a K&N and WB exhaust thats all jshtex has is the 14t up front and he has no problem staying with the 440's and 416's!!!! Run the 14, you will do best with it!!

On dirt I run a 16/36.

In sand a 15/36.

And I'm 90-95% of the time the fastest 400ex out there.

I like the 16 tooth alot when its just dirt drags only. Less shifting, easier to keep the front end down.

Not good gearing for much of anything else.

When I tried the 16t it was pretty much a dirt drag. i dont like it at all. i went back to the 15 and lined up with a guy who beat me before and beat him by about 3 bike lengths!!!!

nako... Is a 36 a stock rear sprocket??? ( Not being a smart ***** I just don't know). All I can say is that for any type of drag racing you want to lower the rear end gearing, car, bike or whatever. You don't need a lot of top end speed in a drag race. I certainly can see that you would have to shift less, but you would spend more time out of the peak rpm range, and therefore have a slower time.:D

yes , 36 in the rear.

I take that back the 16 tooth up front ain't that good. It has been a long time sense I tried it, and I tried it out at my moms house today just for the **** of it. And it was slower than the 15/36 gearing..

I been running 15/36 for so long now its getting hard to remember what anyother gearing feels like.

Nakomis, I was wondering why you thought the 16/36 gearing would be good!!! That is a bit too high, especially for drag racing!! Next time you go to a drag strip you should time yourself with the 15/36, then try a 14/36,,,I bet you would get better times with the 14 up front, especially being that you have already geard up to a 36 in the back!!!
hows that Temp guage workin for ya????

I don't only drag race. We run top speeds alot on the fire roads and state lands alot. So I need to keep up with 6 gear Banshees.

A 14 tooth would be nice for dragging , could probably pull 2nd gear starts with out a problem.

That 16/36 combo was what, was first recommended to me, by the guy that did my porting and valve work, he built 1 other bike like mine before. I forgot that gearing didn't work out well.

I messed with my gearing so much I get em mixed up sometimes.

Temp guage is still sweet:D , gotta let me know what temps your running with that big old motor, oil cooler & pingry:blah

Yeah the 14 is best for drag racing! We always run 2nd gear starts at the strip!
I actually sold the FST oil cooler, Tom told me I dont need it and I should get rid of it. He said I only need it If Im going to run XC or ride hard for long periods of time! He said I wont have a problem with heat like everyone thinks!!! I sold it for $90 shipped! I still have the Pingry, colder plug, and scoops, so hopefully it will be fine!
