How many more amps could I draw off of the battery/stock stator without causing any problems. I am thinking about adding some additional lights on my 400 for night riding in the desert.

Thanks in advance,
D

you can safely add an additional set of 35 Watt lights to a 400EX without over-stressing the stator.

Those 55 watt lights you have the link to would eventually cause your stator to go out. It would run for a while, but they are actually too big for a stock stator.

I know it sucks... I'm gonna have to change my stator too becasue the TrailTechs I wanna use are 55 Watts. I feel your pain.

For those that are curious, you don't automatically "blow" your stator if you hook up too many lights.

Your electrical system is roughly 12 volts, and it can only supply a certain number of amps before it overheats. If you try to pull too many amps, it will eventually melt the insulation on the wire in your stator, and cause it to fuse together. After that, you get zero output.

You can hook up 500 watts worth of lights on a 100 watt stator, and it will light them all, for about 5 minutes.

Now thats 55 per light? Or 55 for total output?

Ok last question is the 55w rating for the high beam setting? I am pretty sure it is but just wondering.

The stock headlights on a 400ex are 30 watts each on high or low beam, they just have a different beam pattern. If you are looking for the ultimate lighting setup that will run on a stock stator trouble free check out baja designs hid super lights. Here is my setup ,they unclip from the bike in mere seconds when not needed. These things are the absolute ultimate in atv lighting ,these things will light up a jumbo jet five miles high
