is there any difference between a 1979 xr 500 motor and a newer xr 500

Whats your definition of a "newer" XR 500? They haven't made them for a while

i'm pretty sure they are the same as far as the engine goes, they are torque monsters:eek2: but hard to start at times:mad: my dad had a '83 XR500 and we restored it sat out side for 8 years and the guy had the valve seats done and when we bought it had gas that was about 6 years old and it ran great:eek: it was all faded so we painted it with krylon and got some honda stickers.we paid $800cdn and got $1800cdn for it;)

i no where i can get a motor for around 350 bucks thinking of saving it for a future project the xr 500 motor is basicly the same thing as the 400ex motor isnt it looks like it

how much horsepower do u think the xr 500 makes and is there any aftermarket parts for it

the 79-82 xr500's were the old design, thats what the 350x and 250x/300ex motors are based off. 83 and up are RFVC like the 400ex, they had a different bore stroke, different motor entirely.
