Well I have some detailed pics of the new R. I'm sure most of you have seen and heard everything about it but I hope I can add some more detail here. I may have to trade in my '05 if the right deal comes along, but we will soon see.

The airbox now has a hole in the back end of it.

450robot
09-11-2005, 08:58 PM
imo, i liked the old airbox better, the tucked away tube might not have had as much flow, but the new one is right by an open spot where water can sneak in

Jonas
09-11-2005, 08:59 PM
As you can see down from the hole there is a tube that runs down as to not allow dirt to directly hit the air filter. You can also see the 40% larger air filter.

Jonas
09-11-2005, 09:07 PM
They put noise diffusing material in the tube.

Here is a black 06. Going out from the air box there is some cutouts now in the rear plastic for better air flow to the air box. You can see this better on Honda's website. The pictures I took of the red ones didn't turn out. The cutouts are right in front and below the H in "HONDA".

i wonder if the airbox lids fit on 05 and lower models

you could have you airbox with the tube in the front, and then the tube on the lid

twice the flow, same protection!

Alright, wifes off to work. Heres a pic of the battery. I would get a kick myself but am glad they have the option. They claim six more pounds with the electric start. The electic start version should ship this month. If you want a kick you better get your deposit down because they will be very limited production. At the show, they claim that they will only make what dealers order on their initial order of the kick. I guess they figure electic start will sell 10 to 1 over kick as far as I can tell. Kicks they say won't be available until jan, feb, march area. Dealers can still add to their original orders, so if you want a kick you might want to get a deposit in soon.

Anyways, you can see that the battery is frame mounted about where a 400ex battery is. They did seal up the batt box good and it doesn't look like a mess like the ex does.

Ok, heres the 40mm fcr. This is a e-start model so you can also see the mitsuba starter down below on the left. The choke is a pull out knob behind where is says "choke". It pulls straight out towards the frame tucked behind there. It's nice to see the fcr on it this year.

Honda will not provide a kick start kit for their e-start. I'm sure someone will figure something out but Honda does not support doing it.

It looks like a cap on the e-start version where the kicker would go. Perhaps you could add the kicker along with e-start and have both...just like the CRF450X. The parts might even be interchangeable? Of course you would need new plastic for the kicker pocket.

Ok, here are some front end pics. The headlight looked a little wierd at first but so did the 04 450r when it came out and after a few looks I really liked it. The 06 will take me a few more looks to get used to. All new suspension and a-arm/knuckle geometry. A little wider in the front now. Wheels are a more little "tilted" in now.

No, a close friend decided to go and take the spot. It costs a few bucks to get an extra pass for the show beyond that because you also get lunches and a nice dinner at the MGM Grand Pool with that. Also, they brought in Martina Mc Bride to sing. If they are going to have a new quad out in the coming years I am going to have to plan ahead better and get someone from here to meet up with us:(

No major design changes in the frame as far as I know. I believe it is a little different length. I just stated "new" because it is made differently, it looks similar though. This model is all new everything except for the maybe the tires, grips, etc. but it looks very similar to the '05. They made alot of small changes along with the bigger changes. Some of you are laughing at the small changes but I will take every small change I can get as long as it will improve the machine in stock trim.

Just to let you all know, the offroad products manager at the show has been riding the '06 for two years now he stated. That goes to show you that Honda tests their stuff well before they put it on the market. I am looking forward to hearing all of your reviews on how the '06 quad feels stock to stock with you 04 or 05's. Also, his claim was that the '06 450r will have 4 to six more horse that the '05 HRC to HRC. Thanks all!!!!!

These were running units. That should be the paint that you would get on yours if you were to buy one. I think that the flash on the camera brought the metallic in the paint out. It is not sparkly in person.

I've been told one other manufacturer prototypes their engines 3 years before we ever get to see them. I'd guess 2 or three years is standard practice for all the major players in powersports markets in general.

That would be a great place. But I think becuase of the air box and also because of the rear suspention mount it makes it hard. and like the aftermarket battery boxes for the 400ex they always break off becuase of the wieght of the battery.

I have an idea...How bout an aluminum twin spar frame that holds the gas in the frame. then the battery could go somewhere where the tank would be. this would even out the weight so much for a racing quad. plus, then honda could design a better looking gas tank that resembled the 250R tank. Just generating ideas :macho

Yes, because of the Ti valves used. If you look at the manual for the CRF you have to change the piston every ten hours and the valves most likely twice per year. The CRF is a full blown race bike. But the TRX is not. It is built to last. That why it has 3 ring instead of the CRF's two. And the use of Ti intake and Steel exhaust

I figured a good spot would be right in front of the engine, like a ATK/C-Dale, to help get the weight bias forward, as long as the header temps didn't mess with it?

The Honda rep just said that the radiator was smaller and more that sufficient for the quad. This motor definately looked alot more like the dirt bike but I am sure it is still beefed up to handle the quad's weight. Still has ti intake and stainless exhaust valves.

this has nothing to do with the 06 honda jonas but I noticed in you're sig it says everettpowersports.com. That is where I got my 04 from I know it's totally off topic but I thought you might have been interested in that.

Suzuki show is in just over two weeks. I think which ever one a person chooses will be high performance for sure. I like the fact that the yfz and 450r have had tens of thousands of test riders in the last few years though. I'm sure that yamaha and honda have brought this knowledge into their new models. I will be sure to get some detailed pics of the Suzuki here coming up also.

if they want someone to put it through it's paces and possibly test the 6 month warrantee I'm the guy you need. You could PM me a price if you can beat my local dealer I would make the drive to everett again if the price is right.
