If you are just rebuilding it stock, all you should need is gasket kit and piston rings. You should probably have someone hone the cylinder so your new rings seat properly.

what about valve seals?

you could do that also, if you buy the oem gasket kit, I believe it comes with valve seals and all o-rings. I think I paid like $40 for the entire kit from my local Honda dealer. If you have never done anything with the valves, I would take it somewhere to have it done, it is kind of a pain in the but.

yeah, if I were you, I would get a high comp piston (JE, Ross, or Wiseco) 10.5-10.8:1 (11.1 if Wiseco) and a drop in cam, you can do all that on stock bore and it will give you more top end and HP. That is what I did, really wakes up the 400.

i'll probably do that eventually, but i wanna get use to the bike before i start making it faster, other than i might get some kinda of aftermarket header. but it's plenty quick for me right now lol.

yeah, if you don't have suspension done yet, I would do out the suspension (A-arms, Swingarm, and shocks all the way around)before I would crack open the motor. Unless it is smoking or you are losing power, I would say the motor is fine.

it's smoking quite a bit , that's why i am doin the rebuild. i have Works Tripples w/rezzy's on the front, but the back shock is stock. I would love to have a-arms but man... they're just way outta my price range.

Yeah, A-arms and Swingers cost quite a bit but are well worth the money you put into it. What color is the smoke?

white/blue smoke... doesn't smoke when i rev it or traveling at high rpms.. but when i let off she puffs out quite a bit.
