Anyone have any ideas on why my wifes 250ex is hard to shift? I was told the clutches were replaced not long ago. I've tried adjusting the clutches at the front of the engine but it's still hard to shift. Any other things to looks for? Would it help to clean the screen on the centrifugal clutch?

I bought my girlfriend a new '05 250EX earlier this year and it's also hard to shift. It's just a normal characteristic of the bike. If you read almost any review on the 250EX they'll tell you the same thing. Sorry to be the barer of bad news, but I hope this helps.

I know they are known to be somewhat hard to shift but this thing is rediculous. I have a 91 trx200 that is totally beat and it shifts so much better than the 250ex.

Could it be that the previous owner put heavy duty springs when the clutch was replaced? Would that make it harder to shift?

My wifes 03' 250EX is really hard to shift and that is the original clutch in it. That is just the way they are.

Did you ever replace the gear box oil? Mine is not hard to shift at all unless it's cold. sometimes I can't get it into second. I just slow down, put it into nuetral, then start going again right away and it's fine.If you can't get it into nuetral rock it back and forth.

Thanks for the replies. Think I have it figured out for the most part. I turned my idle down and readjusted the clutch and it shifts better now. I'm thinking about trying to clean the screens in the bottom end and replace the clutch soon to see if that helps. I'm going to clean the centrifugal clutch as well. Has anyone cleaned the screens? Is it difficult to do? I have a manual but I haven't read through that section yet. Any tips would be helpful. Thx
