I'm looking at getting a 400 to replace my 440 that I F'd up recently. I just want the damn thing to run, so i can sell it/trade it for a new 4 wheeler.

Can I rebuild the current 440? I know nothing about these things, so if anyone around the St.Louis area would like to help, shoot me a pm or email.

Well it no longer runs. It locked up the piston or something. I have not taken it apart yet, but plan to do so.

The last time I took it out, it made some god awful noise before it shut down for good. It still had oil in it, infact I had just changed it. Maybe I dropped a valve.

But if anyone around the STL area knows how to work on these things and does it right, please let me know.

i have built a few of those. i don't mess with the removing the parts of the head though. i let the shops deal with the head so they can lap the valves and what not.

Will any shops around the area touch the quad since it has a 440 kit on it? I've talked to a couple places and most don't want to deal with it.

I might as well rebuild what I have. But if it was $500 shipped I would consider it.

I took the motor apart and it looks like I need the bottom end rebuilt. Any idea on how much that runs?

Depending what you had messed up on the inside you can easily fix what you have for $500. Now if its a crank or something good Luck! Probably the cheapest place to get a whole new motor is on here or ebay

Well, I drained the oil and pulled the filter and found metal shavings. I pulled the head cover, head, and cylinder and there was some wear on the the piston and cylinder wall. There was a plunger and spring missing from the head though. :eek2: The piston had a few knicks in it along with the head but it still moved freely. I found nothing major that would of caused it to lock up.

So I remove the clutch cover and found several pieces of metal about half the size of a penny. Some of the shaving look bronze/copper. The clutch looks pretty good still. I'm guessing that the damage is in the bottom end somewhere and hoping that it is nothing that can't be fixed.

If you have any leads on a 400EX motor, hook me up.

2005 426ex

I purchased a 2002 300ex engine for the old reliable 1996 300ex for 600 bucks off ebay. Pulled it apart inspected everything slapped it back together and there was no vibrations grabbing slipping banging just a smoothe running 300ex again. If my bottom end goes out on the 400 i will purchase another off ebay:)

He is about 10 miles from me in St.Jacob. I'm going to have to go check him out.

I'm still looking a replacement motor. It must be running and you can prove that it is in good working order.
