I'll get a pic of the skid plate, but I already replaced the gear and we hammered the old gear out a little. Skid plate looks like shredded wheat. I will be getting a new PRM swingarm skid by wednesday.

So your saying just because it doesn't have the best skid plate that its unreliable? :huh That sounds rediculous, the 400EX's don't have all that great of protection either, hardly any stock quads do.

You got that right Derno, and I dont think I would be checking the brand of quad that the guys who offerin to tow me is riding. just as long as he is not wearig any pink boots:D

Guy400
06-16-2002, 05:22 AM
I don't see understand the joke? He hit a rock and bent the sprocket, can happen to any make of quad. For those of you who find it so funny why don't you take your EX's and rock them up on the grab bar and check out the skid plate Honda gave you from the factory--oops, they didn't:rolleyes: Go take your not-protected-from-Honda sprocket and hit a rock with it...please post your results.

After last nights races it's not so great to have been riding a Honda. The only Honda win came aboard GT Thunder's own 250R. Kaw won the 65cc mini class, Zuk won the 80, 125 and 250 dirt bike classes, Zuk also won the 440 Main (GT Thunder's Z400) and a Raptor won the Open class.

good post GuyLT250r , I'm sick of everyone saying they have the best quad . Could have happened to anyone , god knows i needed to get towed or pushed back several times already . It just so happens THIS time Derno24 needed my help . I'm sure sooner or later Derno on his Cannondale or his Z4 will have to help me out . What i said in my second post about a HONDA towing another manufacturer's quad back , i was kidding , some of you guys take this Honda/Yamaha/Suzuki war a lil too far . This is the same as the Chevy/Ford wars that have been going on since trucks have been built . Hey , we drove Derno's quad back to camp in a Chevy Avalanche , does that mean Chevy is better than Ford ??

did i ever say i had the best quad? NO! im not trying to flame notice the J/K on the bottom of the page i have nothing against the zuk i think it is pretty kool, and yamahas are kool to my uncle has a raptor that scares me sometimes! someone asked for hardcore honda fans thats all! take it easy!

Guys this has changed TO THE WAY TO SERIOUS FOR ME FORUM. This is my quad as nj400ex has noted I already have it back together and I am getting the new skid plate from PRM on wednesday. I just thought the picture was neat and like I said to NJ400ex at the time of the incident how funny this was. You guys missed the other way we tried to tow. The guy on the z400 hanging over the handlebars being pulled by the cannondale. Where is a tow rope when you need it. I think we all need a deep breath and continue having fun. Thank you again NJ400EX without you rich would still be hanging from the bars while I pulled him.

Here is the skid. Or shredded skid

06-18-2002, 12:18 AM
ya but thats a plastic skid plate over the sprocket and disc brake! Your right honda did but a plastic belly plate on the 400EX but at least the put a metal on on the swing arm! Honestly what was Suckzuki thinking? How long did they think that was going to hold up? Really?

Newsflash for you guys. Take a look at the skids on most of the new quads, plastic is becoming very popular from the manufacturers. Z400, Raptor, Warrior, I know for a fact that the 02's have plastic on them. Haven't looked at an 02 Honda to see if it's plastic as well. It's cheaper, so they're going to use it.

Don't be too quick to bash a manufacturer just because they come from the factory with a plastic swingarm skid, because your Honda's will probably have them in the very near future...

Just one more thing that we're all going to have to replace as soon as we pick a new quad up.

I am not mad at suzuki for not giving me a heavy duty skid plate. $100 corrects that problem. Besides the metal one which everyone used to get bends just as easy. I might not have broke the gear, but I might just as well bent the rotor or done damage to it.

06-18-2002, 07:29 AM
I am sorry but plastic skid plates on an off road machine, just doesn't seem to wise to me. It can't be that much cheaper, sure enough everyone will replace them after awhile I didn't repalce mine until I needed to. I do lot of heavy riding in rock beds and have found that the stock metal honda swing arm skid plate held up pretty decent. Its not a big problem it just one of those things you stare at and wonder what they were thinking, just like how honda doesn't have a skid under the oil tank. Makes you think about whats going on inside the motor? I have nothing against Suzuki, I think they make decent dirt bikes, and they own the street bike industry. However I will take Honda reliablity and dependability any day of the week.

what about those maier deals. they are plastic. are they any better. are metal ones better?

dave

06-19-2002, 10:05 PM
not that I have seen why would you want plastic over metal anyways? Just to save a little weight? If all you did was race MX or something I might have a plastic swing arm skid but for enduro or something metal is the only way to go.

Maier has plastic full length skids for the frame, but I don't think any aftermarket company was making plastic swingarm skids.

As for the pathetic factory Honda swingarm skids, you can pancake those things on a single rut, tree crossing, or rock. They'll hold up for a little while, but if you smack something with much speed, they're a pancake and they'll be rubbing the sprocket and/or rotor. But at least they're easy to bend back into shape.

As for the cost, I'll amost guarantee that the plastic factory skids are injection molded plastic. Companies buy the plastic in railcars for about 40 cents per pound. Then they add filler material to make the resin last longer (more parts for the same amout of plastic). How much does that swingarm skid weigh? 0.25 lbs? So, $0.40 per pound, and it's 1/4 of that, so they have $0.10 worth of material in the skid. Compare that to stamping one out of sheetmetal, guarantee the sheetmetal costs more. Now multiply that price difference times the number of quads they make. That's why manufacturers are going to plastic swingarm skids.

New skid plate is in I will post a pic tonight so you can see how over done this plate is. I will have to hit it with a sledge to break this one.
