with my 05 300ex running like crap as usual i have been thinking about selling and going bigger.
but then again i was thinking about beefing up the 300ex a little. is there any substantial power to be had from a pipe and jets? i dont want to really tear into it too much. whats the best pipe choices for a reasonable price?

you'll get a pretty decent increase with a full exhaust, air filter, take the lid off if you can and re jet

Aye, you'll notice a pretty decent increase with the above changes. It will NOT have the power of a 400ex or 450r of course though.

Think Dodge Neon => Charger => Viper.

and no, the Neon is not a STR-4. ;)

You can put thousands of dollars into the 300ex to beat on stock 400's but $500 into a 400ex will negate that. And, you have about the same step (not quite as huge), from the 400ex to the 450r.

ya i'm not expecting a HUGE hp jump. i am just looking for more power. i dont race it, its only recreational. i just cant justify to myself the expense of selling and buying a new one.
what can i expect from a pipe and jet? noticable power difference? minor?
what would be a decent pipe to go with that is reasonable on price and volume?

I think curtis sparks makes the best 300ex exhaust, but fmf, white brothers etc. make 300ex exhausts. Goto denniskirk.com or rockymountainatv.com and look at the 300ex pipes, it will give the prices and all that good stuff. I run a cobra exhuast. Its really really loud but it only cost me 150 bucks with a new oversized header and everything, most people will say cobra is junk, it may be but my 300ex with the exhaust runs good. Don't forget to rejet or u won't feel any power diffrence.

Sparks does make one fine exhaust system and it might be a compelling choice if you were building a racing engine. However, if your looking for lots of bang for little bucks, I'd think about getting a DG RCM exhaust system for about $175. It's not forest rated and is far from quiet but it's a complete system that does perform.

I put one on one of my boys 300ex's along with a Twin Air filter and noticed a good performance gain after re-jetting. Sure it's not as fast as his race bike but it's fast enough for a practice/ back up bike...
