I know what you mean. The first one I tore down was very cool to do. I have done prolly 30 400ex motors and do have some pics somewhere?

I will get some when I tear down this 00 400ex I got in.

Here is pic of 400ex crankshaft to transmission clearance as the crank comes around. I slid a feeler gauge between them and it was around .020 :eek2:

Trans and crank are still inset in left side center case in pic with right side removed.

Servicehonda.com has schematics on all the parts but it's hard to see how they fit together.

If you need specific pics let me know. It is much easier to reassemble something if you have good pics to go by. The bottom end would be the only tedious parts. If you need to split the bottom you can leave the whole stator side on for inspection. You just remove the clutch, primary drive and oil pump and can pull the side off.

Well at least you caught the gears now Tina. I shredded 2nd completely and it was locked up, the rear tires would not move, about a mile or so back in a woods away from anything as well. I ended up having to replace 3 gears, and get a new oil pump because metal shavings went everywhere...

Oh and just so you know, Service Honda was the cheapest place I found for ordering all the stock parts...

Nope I didn't get any pictures of the damage, but my screen was completely full of shavings. It was a mess, but luckily I got stopped right away so it didn't destroy more parts. I took it out for the first good ride today, felt good to ride it after a month and a half of being down...

yah, there a almost buckets that the cam are sitting in, and when you put the head cover on, there are buckets in it, that when the two come together, the form a clamp and hold the cam in place
