Will the 450r shocks line up on a z400? And will they fit on a 400ex also? I heard that they will but wanted to make sure?

They will fit, but you need to grind some off the top mount, and they wont work correctly.

I just installed 450r shocks on my dads 400ex. The only modification is you have to remove the nut that holds the front fender brackets. I just zip tied the mounts back on.

Just because they fit doesn't make them correct. Please search about 35 different threads on this.

From what i have heard that these 450r shocks are way better than than the stock Z400 shocks. A lot of people are saying that they are a little stiff, but i need stiff I weigh 250lbs and at 6'2"
I know that the stock 03 Z400 front shocks are pretty bad for my weight. If anyone has a set of 450r shocks for sale PM me. I dont want to pay 400 to 800 dollars for shocks when i only trail ride 1 a month!

correct? its a generic shock made for a variety of rider weights..

what exactly is the problem??

if your thinking "geometry"(which has gotten to be an abused word) then you really havent looked at each quad.. the differences are hardly notable... the length, angle and quads dry weights are too close to be a problem..

just because its not a "tuned" aftermarket shock, that doesnt make it incompatible to a variety of very, very similar quads..

MODEL QuadSport® Z400 (LT-Z400)
Front: Independent, double A-arm, 5-way adjustable preload, 8.5 in. of travel
Rear: Linkage-type, gas/oil damped, fully adjustable spring preload, adjustable compression and rebound damping, 9.1 in. of travel
DRY WEIGHT 372 lbs.

MODEL Sportrax® 450R
Front: Independent double-wishbone w/Showa shocks, featuring adjustable spring preload, rebound & compression damping; 8.4-inch travel
Rear: Pro-Link w/single Showa shock featuring adjustable spring preload, rebound & compression damping; 9.0-inch trav
DRY WEIGHT 350 lbs.

only 22lbs difference dry weight for a rider that could weigh 150 to 250lbs..
the shocks lengths, mounting locations and angles are just too close..

i could probably go through quite a few full sets of stock shock "takeoffs", before i spend enough cash to buy a single set of finely tuned shocks, that these minor differences actually might effect the long term performance of..

They are two different quads with two different setups. The 450 for one weighs less, has longer a-arms and I seriously doubt that they angle of the shock remains the same on both quads throughout the whole stroke. Each shock is vavled and sprung for that machine. You could make them work, but would require at least a revalve and possibly a respring. Like I said before search the topic there is plenty of info on this already and if you still are in doubt ask the suspension guru Jeff@thequadshop.

the 450r fits perfect on your z400

i done it on a friend z400 and it work VERY good plus i grind just a little bit of the stock z400 spring to have it fit the 450r shock and it work again very good;)

Enough of the BS, i want to know from the people only that has tried this and how did it turn out? Was it to stiff to soft? Is it worth doing or should i get a set of work steelers and say f**k it!
Remember i dont race i ride once a month down on some land i own in the sticks in Southern Ohio. I do ride very aggressivly though. When we do go riding we will put on 100 miles a day/night, we ride at night usually till the sun comes up! but like i said Im 250lbs and im 6'2" I heard of a lot of people doing this conversion and just thought id ask here first. Thanks for the replys but at this point im still not sure what to do. You can get these shocks from 100.00 to 170.00 so it is a lot cheaper than the aftermarket shocks.

Jeff@thequadshop should have an automatic response that posts itself in every thread in this section with "450r shocks" in the title, explaining why its a bad idea. Search.

Exactly, thats where i have been reading about putting 450R shocks on Z400. Im a member there also. Theres a lot less smart asses on that sight but it dosent have as many members as Exriders and dont get your answers questioned some times. But its a great sight as well!

Ok well you have been answered, and with the answers you have gotten and the search button you should be able to gather enough info to make a decision. If I was in your shoes, I would prbably just get the 450R shocks. Or try and find 05 take offs from a new Z. Price being your number one issue. The 450R shocks w/ a revalve/respring are going to be better than any works IMO, but if you have the money get a set of elkas or axis or something along those lines, because those shocks set up for your weight and bike will blow 450R shocks out of the water. Hope this helps.

Thats how works got into it and that is MY opinion, I didn't say they are definitely better than works, but it is MY opinion that they are.

Well i didnt read the whole post so i dont know if someone else already said it but if you that worried about if there going to fit or not just look for some shocks off a new sukawcat 400 they are basicly the same shock as on the 450r and they will work perfectly. I have 450r shocks on my 400 and i didnt have to do anything to make them fit (i have maier race cut fronts i dont know if you have to disconnect the mount with a stock front) They work great and the ride is a million times better than it was with the stock front shocks and im a big guy 6'4" 260. Hope the input helps

They will work. I have used them for MX for a year now and for what I pay...They are better then stock and works shocks in my opinion.
