300ex rear shock

My buddy was thinking about changing the rear shock on his 300ex, but does not feel like spending hundreds and hundreds on a works etc. I was wondering if there is any other option for a rear shock on his 300. Any dirt bike rear shocks or any quad rear shocks? I think anything that would fit and has a resevior would be better than stock, right?

A 2001 Yamaha Raptor rear shock works better than a works in my opinion. I bought mine for $55 Shipped and it was in perfect condition.

Just to let you know, it HAS to be a year 2001 rear shock. This year they made it with a remote rezzy, all other years had a piggyback rezzy and it wouldnt fit.
