I am currently thinking about replacing the engine on my 300ex and building some sort of hybrid. There are a few kx 250 engines on Ebay that are going pretty cheap. I really want to pick one up but people are telling me to stay away from 2 stroke because of counterbalance and all that $hit....what do you guys think?

Also..give me other ideas for hybrids or let me know if you know anyone selling a dirtbike engine!

put a crf450 engine in it,that would be awesome.

Use one of the new 250 fourstroke dirtbike engines. That would be sweet.

use rubber in between the mounts to make the counterbalancing not hurt anything

The newer 250 motors would not make a good hybred motor. Especially a honda 250 motor. Read some of the long term and 24hr tests and find out why. I'd build up your 300ex motor or get a 350x motor for it.

hello!!! everyone keeps saying "counterbalacing" ... im gonna say .. if you dont know what your talkin about.. dont hit "REPLY TO TOPIC" The kx250 motors DO NOT HAVE A COUNTERBALANCER! which means, it vibrates.. whoopie, cant take a little headshake..

a 300ex with a kx250 motor in it would be retarded fast and extremly quick.. id do it in a heartbeat if i was in your position.. just be prepaired for some cutting, welding, fabricating, cuz youll need to do it, EXPECIALLY when it comes time for the exhuast.

Obviously you have never ridden a quad with a non-counterbalanced bike engine in it.It is more than a "little" vibration.

I wouldn't, but zsk should try to purchase that motor for the 86 tacate 3 I gave him.

If you want to build something like that, I'd keep your 300ex the way it is. Get yourself a rolling chassis and pick out the motor of your choice. That way you always have something to ride while your sorting out the bugs of your project bike.

If the motor was toast, again a 350x motor would be perfect for it. Powroll makes a direct bolt on kit for your quad.

if you want a hybrid i would sell the 300, buy a 250r rolling chassis and stick a yz or crf dirtbike motor in.

I would say find a 350x engine, unless your just going for something different. There are alot of 350x conversions out there in 250x/300ex frames and in 250r frames and they all seem to run/perform great. They actually mount up quite nice in 250x/300ex frames, if I remember right the rear top engine mount is the only one that doesn't bolt up directly, just need some slightly modification for it.

I don't know any actual HP numbers, but all I have run/raced with can run with or beat depending on the mods of modded 400ex's. So your lookin at similar numbers to mildly modded 400ex's. My guess would be somewhere from 30-32HP. But thats just my guess on an actual number

the only reason i am thinking "no" is because of the exhaust situation

i would say say no, your looking at a lot of fab work and a lot of down time. if you really want a hybrid do the 350x, its a great combination and proven. but IMO it would be best to sell yours and buy a 400ex or a z400. so much more potentional and you can be riding it the day you bring it home. also if something breaks you dont have to hunt down parts and try to make things fit.

i would love to grab an motor out of quadzilla and make a hybrid one day, seems like an 500cc 2 stroke would be a lot of fun to hit the powerband in
