yes you would, but look at it this way.... if u move to mid west you have tornadoes, north-blizzards,east-i have no idea, and out west- wild fires, mud slides, earthquakes. so anywhere you live really has its own form of nasty weather

08-27-2005, 10:35 PM
Maybe they should start building better :) after living in hurricane alley (St. Maarten) you should know not to build with frame and stucco.

Yeh,Its coming directly to us.Im in south Louisiana.About 2 hours west of new orleans.I actually enjoy hurricanes. But not people getting hurt or anything, just watching them. But I heard its goin to be pretty bad. We're not going anywheres, staying right where we are,in our new little mobile home. But we do have an old trailer in our yard that isnt strapped or anything,so it might go through our fence. If it gets to bad,we're gonig to the local college (LSU) where my mom works.Wish us luck,it'll be interesting :p

looks like it is now a catagory 5! i have never been a believer in global warming and junk, but something seems to be changing the weather. maybe just a normal pattern of change?

in any event, stay safe for all those that will be impacted.:(

This is a BAD Hurricaine. 175 MPH sustained winds, 210 gusts. If it hits at this strength, it will level the ocean coast where it hits. Please dont stay if you are in the area, just get out and worry about the material things later.
My prayers are with the people in the New Orleans area.

I,personally am not that worried, eventhought im not to far from new orleans.I can drive south and ill be to the gulf in 20 minutes tops.I know im realy underestimating it.But my mom doesnt want to leave, she said if it gets worse we'll just go to her work, which is 30 minutes away,i dotn know if we'll make it lol. They said new rleans will be between 20 and 30 feet underwater. And I have an old stubborn uncle there, who thinks he will just go on his roof like he did 40 years ago.I will post pics during and after the hurricane here down south lousiana,so yall can see.I wont have anything better to do while our electricitiy is out for maybe weeks.

we are starting to get the first feeder bands from it not too bad yet though. the wind picked up a bit since this morning but nothing compared to what tomorrow will bring. they are saying 15" of rain possible with a 20' surge.

08-28-2005, 03:05 PM
Yep they are ****ed..... and Royally ****ed... Last Cat 5 that came thru here bent 24x24 I-beams and twisted them like a pretzel like they were made of clay.

And anyone with an engineering degree can tell you that aint no small task to do.

Sliding Glass door glass blows up like a balloon without breaking because of the heat friction from teh velocity of the wind.

and the Sound is UNREAL!....

Sustained 165mph winds means Gusts of over 200mph, during our last CAT5 (Huricane Luis) we clocked 220 on our local weather station at home and there were tornadoes EVERYwhere.

It does clean up pretty well, no leaves on the trees, no more shacks :) hell no more illegals :)

looks like the eye is going to hit a lil east of us....that means we are on the good side of it...(the winds and tide surge are not as bad on the west side) at least it went down to 160 that is better than the 175 it was earlier today. the wind is definitly picking up and the rain is getting more steady..I know I should have left. I would be more worried about coming out alive then be worried about missing a couple days of school. I have heard the New Orleans will be under several feet of water by tommorrow, and this will be the 2nd strongest documented hurricane. i doubt this thing really kills more than 20 people,

that many ppl have probably died already from panicing and in such a hurry to flee. I can GUARANTEE you it kills FAR more than 20 people. Not trying to sound grim and morbid, but nature is nothing to try and take on... especially when people who have been in this subject area their whole lives are crapping themselves.

Not likely,,, a storm with that powerful makes it own weather system... it will travel well inland and slowly drop form catagory to catagory, it will be well well up north by the time its only a depression again.

I know if i lived in the us, being an architect from there i would not be staying in the house unless its built with concrete blocks, and there are VERY VERY few that build that way in the US.

Stay away from the windows as well, 904 pressure is intense and will suck your windows right out. You will actually soon start feeling the pressure change and might have to do like when you dive and blow your nose to clear your ears.

Obviously you have never been thru a major hurricane... a simple 130mph hurricane flattened Hialeah in florida completely to the ground, NOTHING LEFT!. and to us down here a 135mph is nothing to worry about, but 175? thats something really to worry about and if the 175 wind dont happen to take your roof off (which it will) the twisters inside the hurricane will do it.

But for those who doubt what it will do and think its nothing, watch the news Tuesday to see the distruction..

Yeah you go outside when it hits about 80mph winds sustained you can stand at a 45 degree angle against the wind :) take some pictures of that..

But after that GET YOUR ***** INSIDE! you might think you have an eye on every little object flying around outside but the object thats is moving away from you one minute will be in your face the next.

haha, beginners, you want the eye to come over you, if the eyewall edge passes close to you, you dont ahve a break to check or fix anything what so ever, it will be continuous battering, trust me you want that 15 to 30 minute break to secure anything that might need securing, then wait for it to start up again.

The eye is the best part, its very eary (sp) and cool to be in the eye.

if sustained 100-110 made life aorund ehre not the same for months, whats 160 gona do, espeacially to a town below sea level... for u ppl who live in the midwest or w/e, the center and aorund the center are equivalent to an F3 tornado, and a huge on at that

08-28-2005, 08:48 PM
yes and unlike a tornado, it stays there for hours not seconds or minutes.

Cat five has a name (catastrophic) and there is a reason for that, i would not stay in baton rouge thats for damn sure especially if your in a mobile home or a frame and stucco house.

but ja if you want to ride it out, grab hold of the toilet and hope for the best.

Speaking of the toilet, watch the water lunge around inside from the pressure, if the eye gets close enough to ya the toilet will be empty :)

I said 3-4 weeks but thats assuming they do like when florida got hit and sent support from pretty much ever state down there....

When luis hit us down here we didnt have electricity for 6 months and in some areas 10 months.

There is still time to drive you ***** west a few hours to get out of the worst of it, it should be still a cat 4 when it hits baton rouge.

but we learned that over head power lines are not the way to go so now everything is underground, from cable to telephone to power, no more poles with wires anywhere.

Andrew was an overrated hurricane, its was very tight and effected only a very small diameter on its path over florida, but where it went over you must admit, there was ZERO left ZEERROOO..

i know i personally drove thru the area right after before the marshal law went into effect keeping people out of the area.

Your talking about Andrew or this one???? no in andrew hardly anyone evacuated, because they underestimated it just like your doing now... but watch now when one comes towards them they scatter like flies.

Ok dont bother answering i see the BR..

well good luck to ya for those who stayed.

hopefully its one of those hurricanes where is almost all upper level winds only, then there is nothing to worry about.

its cool when its like that too coz you can hear it above you but dead quiet with very little wind below... we had one of those last year, everyone prepared and it was all upperlevel winds only.

But boy TONS of rain :)

This is a concrete block house during andrew (only 135mph winds)

the walls might have stayed but the roof was inadequate.

now imagine your in a frame and stucco house, which is only designed to withstand 120mph winds.

Cable should still work for quite a while afterwards...

try to save your UPS power for the computer and just turn it on when you want to give update then turn off the computer again.

if its a good ups and your windows loads fast you should get us alot of updates with a good energy saving monitor and new computer with a 15 minute ups.

The new on were livng in is strapped. But our old one,the people neevr came strap it,liek they were suppose to do 2 weeks ago.And I was thinking "aww nothing will happens to us,chances are slim",my mom just showed me pics from hurricane andre, not andrew. It his holley beach(well known camp ground on gulf of mexico),wel my grandfather owned 5 camps there. And 4 of 5 of them are in the gulf of mexio right now,They were all lifted at least 15 feet.they have pics of people on their roos. And thousands floated away into the gulf on their roofs, and hundreds dies from snakes.hen it was smaller than this one.So im not underestimating it anymore.

Hopefully this trend continues and the hard stuff stays off shore and it dies out quickly.

I am originally from,Just South of New Orleans,(Chalmette).some of the things you guys dont realize is that they are 3 ft under sea-level.it is not only the rain and wind,it is the chance of a levee breaking.sending water into St,Bernard Parish and New Orleans.New Orleans already has a break in the levee by the Intercoastal Canal Tennessee St. A peice of the Superdome roof came off too.......

08-29-2005, 09:24 AM

fasterblaster09
08-29-2005, 09:25 AM
Yes,and some places they said its 6 under sea level. And the mayor was told that the levves WOULD NOT hold if it was 160 mph winds, and it would be compeltely under water. And they said even if a miracle happened, and they held, then it woudl still be under water. They just showed on the local news, that one of the lightpoles outside of the uperdome, has just lifted out the ground.Dont know if its true. But now its changing direction towards mississippi, and they said soon it will be only CAT 3.

Its been Cat 3 now for a while, but the levee is beginning to fail, the pumps are off, and water levels inside of New Orleans are now at 9 feet, and rising rapidly.

Lets not forget the less populated areas of Louisiana that arent getting the media attention the big cities are.

People try to be heroes and ride it out at home! WHY?? Get the hell out, now what happens is they call for help, and endanger the life of others. I'm also from miami and grew up in Hialeah where Dierwolf stated. That hurricane destroyed our community, schools, jobs , homes everything gone. The force these things pack are incredible. I also saw first hand the damage that Andrew caused and it also completely flattened neighborhoods, concrete neighborhoods. A lot of people were found dead in there homes. It was truly a depressing and hard time to live through. My prayers are with everyone in Katrina's path.

New Orleans is 15 feet under sea level with 15 feet levies built up keeping water out, i know levies broke.

The roof blew off the Superdome

I heard they can't even bury people in New Orleans cuz they will float to the top of the ground because of the ground level, so they put them in buildings, then they will probably be floating around after the hurricane destroys everything

Best of luck to everyone

A multi-millionaire would go broke before he made a dent in this tragedy. Theyre saying roughly $27 in insurance damages, and that doesnt cover things like the broken levees, and square miles of swamp land lost that protects La from smaller hurricanes, and other state property damages such as powerlines, sewers, water, and things like that.

It definitely was not over rated and was nothing to screw around with...if it didnt change paths, and maintained Cat 5 status, it would have smacked New Orleans with its east eye wall and killed well into the thousands, and possible obliterated the entire city of New Orleans...like...no more New Orleans. They are lucky, but only compared to what could and prob should have happened.

ja i like that picture as well, During Luis we had a super freight liner sitting in the middle of one of our valleys about 3 miles inland :)

but ja thats 220mph winds and huge storm surge.

LIke i said, yes they were hit hard but they lucked out, it was mostly upper level winds plus it broke up quite quickly as soon as it hit land...

Very Very lucky not to have the 165mph winds down at the ground.

I too remember someone here stating its overrated and not as bad as you think, LOL....

Imagine if they did have the 165mph winds.

Pay will be good, but that is not what we are concerned with. At this time we are concerned for the ones noone knows about. Good luck and godspeed to all!

just got my power back. we lost power about 2:30 mon morning that is when i woke up. about 4am I was outside in it trying to tie my fence down. one of the poles snapped off where it is cemented in the ground causing the fence to hit the house back and forth. i had to tie it down so it wouldnt go thru my dining room window..that was fun..trust me.. I made out like a bandit i think...i only had that lil bit of fence broken and some shingles on my shed gone. we were very lucky. the winds here were clocked at 90 sustained and gusts of 125..I am glad we were on the good side. today when the power started coming back around town the cars were lined up at least 30 deep (no exageration) waiting to get gas. as burger king and other places like that opened it was the same thing. they are asking for people to volunteer to bring their boats to New Orleans to help in search and rescue...we cant get there the roads are out. tonite was the first images of new orleans I have gotten to see...it is truly amazing...the same thing of biloxi...to see places on tv that u have been to.. have hung out at. under water or gone. It will be a long time before things are normal there. I truly feel for those people. I took these pics on the way to check on my parents house right after the storm....not too bad compared to other places

Yeah no crap.

I read that the Mayor of new ahlins is complaining that the levee's aren't being fixed fast enough. I wonder if anyone has explained to that retard that the F - IN city is below sea level. Your fighten physics people. Everyone new this day would come and now WE smart people that build houses in areas that aren't 100% garaunteed to be flooded one day have to pay for the poor decisions of those that can't think straight. Leave that craphole of a town under water and send everyone to higher ground to rebuild.

its bad there, that city isnt going to be the same for years, and if we are in a 30 year cycle of increased hurricane activity the might as well not even bother

Agreed.Do you know, how much of an attraction i is.So many people go on mardi gras,on bourbon street.I think they will rebuild it,may be 5 years later, maybe 10,maybe 20.But I know that new orleans is something lousiaian wont let go.No matter what it takes.

guys rico is right. new orleans is the armpit of La. hell I live down here and I can see it. Look at all the looting going on...they even shot a cop trying to stop a looter. they should shoot those guys on sight no questions asked...murder rate, political corruption etc. not to say there are not good people there because there are but as a whole the image it portrays to the rest of the nation is exactly what rico said...I guess the truth hurts some people. like a radio dj said down here...I heard it today and I had to laugh....next time they evacuate they need to make a shelter for all the gangsta wannabees...if they dont have a gun give them one..if they want a knife give them one...let em all kill each other. I have friends that live there and in the burbs around there. they basicly feel the same way in general but I do feel sorry for those people...we finally heard from some friends that live there. they have 8' of water in their house...it will be a long time before things are normal there again...on a bright note they are moving alot of the people in the dome to houston....maybe some of the troublemakers will like it there and stay.

We may never have set foot in the city but it does not take an engineer to realize that being below sea level is probably not the smartest thing on the face of the earth. For years they have known it was going to happen and it did. Now as they start to rebuild, they will build closer to the ocean and build bigger homes so the next time it costs more money.

NEWSFLASH:

SOMETHING MOST HAVEN'T TALKED ABOUT. WITH THE RAIN MOVING NORTH AND POSSIBLY FLOODING THE OHIO VALLEY, THE OHIO RIVER WILL SWELL UP, WHEN THIS HAPPENS IT WILL SWELL THE MISSISSIPPI AND THE MISSISSIPPI DUMPS AT NEW ORLEANS RIGHT BEHIND ANOTHER LEVEE. THEY HAVE THEIR HANDS FULL. IF THEY CAN'T FIGURE SOMETHING OUT QUICK THE MISSISSIPPI WILL RUN OVER NEW ORLEANS NOT JUST THROUGH IT!!!!!!!!!

Yes I know, the crime rate is UNBELEIVEABLE,but, with all the people new orleans brings in each year.Do you honestly think the will let it go??

the river levees are not the issue...the river swells every year with the snow melt. they also have spillways up the river they can open to lower the water level....although one of them drains into the lake. but the river is low right now it would take alot more water than that storm gave to top the levee on the river

Rico, I've always loved you, but screw that. Since you read something that told you about our mayor complaining about the levee's not being fixed, I'm SURE you know everything there is about N.O. It takes fixing levee's FIRST, then pumping the water out. The mayor does seen dumb, like many in New Orleans (which actually are), but he's really not so. He's got his priorities straight but doesn't have the resources to do anything. Take away gas, electricity, food, water, and phone service and let me know how you would do it two days after the sinking of a major city? Also, you'll have to save about 20,000 people along the way in a matter of days starting from NOTHING. Also, people can't help others when they can't even help themselves.
Sure, everyone knew one day this would happen. Be it 3 days or 3 centuries away. You built your home where a tornado could wipe you out in a matter of minutes, aren't you an idiot... Why didn't you move to California? Think on the other side of the fence Einstein.
If you ever lived in New Orleans you'd have a completely different outlook. It's one of the most unique and amazing cities in the country, and that's the reason people love it. IT'S HOME! People don't choose where they grow up, or the people they love, or the town they love. It's almost impossible to choose what you care about; you don't have much control over it. Try not loving someone; you can't just make things like that go away. I'm not so sure they should try and rebuild, but I can understand if they do.
I COMPLETELY agree, a lot of people in the city are gansta wanabe's and people that aren't even worth the price of a bullet to shoot them with. But your extremely insulting some of my family and close friends that are you normally everyday smart people and I get unimaginably protective sometimes.
The majority of the people that didn't leave where too poor or disabled (elderly) to leave. Generally, as you know, these type of people aren't too brilliant, much less educated. In some cases, people couldn't even drive out while using the evacuation route (All highways are on way). Think of 80,000 people trying to leave a city within a day or so.
I'd love to say more, but I'd rather sleep. The last few days have been a bit hectic.

they did'nt hide in their attics...they went there when the water started rising in their home and they could not go outside because of the storm.
