i drive it to school and work, i fill up maybe once ever 2 weeks if i go riding on the weekends, if i dont go riding i fil up once a month, my wokr is like 2 miles away, and my school is about 3 so at the most 12-15 miles a week day usaully is all. And I realize that I will be paying prolly 3+ for a gallon of gas my whole life, and with quads, im sorry but i cant drive a little kia it just wont work.

Im looking for exhuast systems for it, but dont want somthing hella loud. Anyone use the gibson or flowmaster dual exit kits? or any other systems?

And a ford aint?? How many transmissions have u been through on ur ford 150? That was a pretty weak comment.... Chevy small blocks last forever, and so do their 4l60's, 4l60e's, and 4l80e's.

My uncle uses his Silverado 1500 and pulls his 28' camper and hooks either his boat or quad trailer up to the back of the camper. He's done it for years with no problems.

and i would have to concur dude, we been pulling a 20 ft trailer with 3 quads in it and full tool bins and work station inside, then the warrior or another bike on the bed for 2 trips to lorettas (19 hours) rigorous mountain climbing to mt morris and other races, and every other national there is we have been there ( cept texas and cali)

and our gmc sierra z71 is handling it all justt fine!

when I put my 400ex in the back of my s-10 with a v6, I BARELY notice that im hauling it, and I sometimes forget that its in the back. I also have a toolbox full of tools in the back that adds probably 200 lbs.

i got a 87 shortbed f150, with 3in lift and bfg's mud terrian 33's...i had both the flowmaster and the gibson dual kits on it...it had the flowmaster duals on it when i bought it, and they rusted off after 3 years, and they are supposed to be 'lifetime garrenteed' so now i put the gibson stainless steel dual kit on...neither of the kits are incredibly loud they are both the same loudness(if thats a word?) but the gibson has a much better tone, it rumbles like a hot rod:macho

You must work alot, how many hours a week?

But you should look into magnaflow, my uncle got a magnaflow exhaust on his brand new 05 z71, it comes out infront of the right rear tire. Its not real real loud, but it definately sounds good

4L60E's dont last very long with 9" of lift, 36" tires, and 3:73 gears. Been there done that. :D

Don't go any bigger then 275's on the tires, and leave the stock exhaust on it unless you change headers also. Cat backs only provide mental hp and crappier gas miledge.

That is a nice truck, take care of it. My 96 chevy's motor blew at 130,000 miles and I changed the oil at 3,000 or before. Only used valvoline also. You either get a good one or a bad one regardless of the brand. My tranny went at 77,000 miles also. Change your fluid every 30k miles.

If your 5.3 doesn't have the cold start knocking and piston slapp its a good one.

If you don't mind the gas mileage, up to a 305/70 (33") tire is fine. I've had many sets on my trucks. Keep everything greased and nothing will go wrong.

As for exhaust, cut the factory muff off, weld a flowmaster, v-force, magnaflow, or whatever up with a turn-down, unless you're a redneck, then you're allowed to have tips out the back :D Crappier gas mileage? Only because people like hearing the sound and keep their foot in it more.

And if a 5.3 doesnt have the cold start knocking, something is wrong heh. My '04 model with 15,000 miles has it.

nice truck! my buddy has a 2500 with a 383 in it with true dual 3" magnaflows off each header with 3 1/2" tips. It is the only legal system he can do. This thing sounds like a monster truck and it still has the cats and the magnaflow mufflers.i drove it the other night and it hauls ***. spun his new 33s without a problem.

I talked to a guy at a gas station a couple weeks ago that had 1,000,000 miles on his truck. It was a ford diesle, didnt really get to look at it though. He drives from indianapolis, to somewhere in cananda, and then back, every single night. He had a small trailer so I guess he was delivering stuff. I saw him at the same gas station, same truck, same time a week later.

Very nice truck, I wish I had got a Z. Some tires and an exhaust would look kickass. It sucks though that GM is coming out with a new truck in 2007. I just bought my 04' Sierra

by the way, 4L60E's suck when it comes to putting power to them or much strain. That's why GM designed Torque Management and abuse mode.

im not pulling the tailer with it, thats what my dads hd is for, putting the qaud in the back, and maybe a small trailer with 2 quads thats it. I like it, the 5.3s are fast. The only and tranny fuild were cahnged when we bought it, but we do our own mantinece and take care of stuff pretty good, my dad had 212K on his last truck before we sold it, still running good.

As for the chevy vs ford, chevy hands down. the new 1/2ton 2007s are rated at 10,000lbs towing, for a half ton.

Well I wish they would have come out with the new one this year. The motor failures and piston slapp with the 5.3's made me switch to ford for the first time. Of the current trucks its alot better then the new chevy's. And I test drove em all.

Hopefully there new motor will be good, along with the rest of the truck, then maybe I'll switch back one day. If you read the new truck comparisons, that 5.3 is lacking compared to the others. Especially in the timed towing competition.

I liked my old updated 5.7 better then my bro's 5.3. Hopefully there new 3 valve motor will be a 5.7

Just to prove I'm not anti chevy, I am looking for a 67 nova for a project car.

Martin Blair

well my 5.3 dont seem to have any detanation or piston slap when it starts up, however my dads hd does with the 8.1L (496) wo we might watch it.

The 5.3s are a updated 327, it doesnt have the low edn torque, but it takes off about 2800 rpm and pulls till about 4500, not the best for low end towing power, but i like it.

Wow, I could never buy a 5.3L these days. My V6 3.8 Chevy 1500 sucks up more money outta my wallet then I want to admit.

I want a nice, V-twin truck.:macho

86350x, care to explain the piston slap and motor failures?

The new truck seems like its going to be nice, and even better than the current trucks. The new Fords are SLOW! My dad has a 5.4L and my brother has the smaller v8. Both of them are horribly slow and get 14.5mpg. My 5.3L gets 16.5+, which isn't special but still better. The current 5.3's aren't all that updated. The newer H.O.'s are aluminum blocks... Thats about it for anything out of the ordinary.
I love Chevy's, all the mags bash them, but it's mainly because they havent brought a completely new truck like every other manufacturer. When they do the new one will be all the hype.

Its not b.s. Even friends that are chevy techs admited this to me. Look up car and drivers tests and consumer reports. For the quad cab trucks the chevy was the slowest and made the least amount of hp. And the ford got the better gas miledge.

I get 18to19 with mine. 16 to 17 pulling 2 quads. I only put on 2,000 miles so far.

I have an 05 fx4 with the 5.4 and a 373 gear rear end.

They speak the truth on there tests too. The ford doesn't feel fast because of the electric like throttle response. The new fords have 45 more hp then the old 5.4's. The 4.6's are slow. The new 5.4 3 valve is a great motor. It pulls like a train and I love this truck.

Maybe there's something wrong with your dads truck. But my super crew has way more balls then my brothers 5.3 has.

Like I said, I wanted to buy a chevy. But that motor is a p.o.s. I'm not going to pay 30k on something new that has ****ing piston slapp. There is a difference between loyalty and stupidity. There trucks from 91 to 96 are great. 1994's are the longest lasting motor. But was down on power compared to the 96. I sold my 96 to my dad after I fixed it all up.

The factory rebuilt motor has a 3 year unlimited warranty and seems to run better then it ever did with the G.M motor in it.

I suggest to the people out there that have the older ones to just keep driving them and fixing them when they need it. My 96 would always get 19mpg sometimes 20 depending on the situation.

But if your getting a new truck, I would not take a chance with one of the new 5.3's.

My bros 1995 S-10 went 235,000 before it started pounding and lost oil pressure. He found a wrecked one with 50,000 on it and put the motor out of that one in it. S10's are great little trucks. Not sure if the colorado will live up to them or not.

The big six was a good motor in the full size trucks also.

trust me, I know a few guys, including my fathers truck (6.0L) that has this piston slap... the trucks run great, burn NO oil and have MANY MANY miles with no problems. I do not doubt this, but the motor failure due to this is BS. That was my point.

My fathers piston slap lasts about 5 seconds or so in the morning, then its fine... its actually fairly quiet... he did not notice it until I pointed it out. He kinda laughed and said, these motors are still 10x quieter than they were 10-20 years ago! I know my dad was happy with his HD when he had to pull a new ford out of a mud pit when the 4wd failed at a job site.

I have heard over and over about this piston slap but has anyone had any first hand (note: I said first hand) experience with internal engine failure due to this??

I am buying a new truck soon and I have looked at Dodge, Ford, Toyota, and Chevy

all reg. cab short beds with v-8's(except the toyota) and here is what I found

Dodge:
Way too heavy. I didn't look at the weight #'s but it feels like a pig. Underpowered even with a Hemi.

Ford: Didn't like that there is no option for a true reg. cab. Even the reg. cab has a rear swinging door(although it is only like four inches) I take back what I said about Dodges being underpowered. This is the king of the slug races. Ford cannot build a gas powered truck anymore, stick to deisel.

Toyota: I actually liked this truck but there is no way I wold pay more for a mid-sized import truck than a full size domestic

Chevy: Although the interior is a little...how should I say..cheap I kind of expected that from GM. It is the lightest out of the full sizes and feels the fastest. The other trucks may dyno with a higher HP rating but I go by the "seat of the pants feel" and Chevy definatly takes the cake on this one. I spend more of my life in the gas pedal not on the dyno.
