okay i am replacing my timing chain myself in my own garage

i am on the part where you remove the clutch. i have already taken off the 5 bolts w/ springs and removed the discs and all that stuff.

i happen to be stuck on the locknut that holds down the basket. in the manual it says you have to use some special "center clutch holder"

i dont have one of those and i want to get this thing done by the weekend, is there anyway around that special tool?

thanks,
johnny

the center clutch holder is to hold the basket when you want to take it apart with a ratchet (sorry I dont know the english term)

You can use a impact I think but not sur of what bolt you talk

You can take it about with an impact wrench, but you must use the special tool to put the nut back on. This nut must also be touqued down when put back on.

what i do is take 2 pairs of vice grips and a metal clutch plate, put the plate on then put the vice grips on in the tall groves. This works for both taking it off and putting it back on.

I just take it off and put it back on with an impact.

how would you hold the clutch center that way?

Don't need to, impact gets it tight before they spin.

if your going to put new clutch plates in do this. take 3 friction plates and two steel plates. line them up in the hub and take a visegrip and clamp them together theres your home made center hub holding tool.

well i'm not going to put new clutch plates in but would it be okay if i used them for the holder anyways?

the friction plates are the ones with no knotches in them, right?
and the steel plates are the ones with knotches, right?

I may be wrong here because I have only done it once.

When I replaced my timing chain I don't think I removed the clutch.

i would reccomend a new set of clutch plates n springs and take old ones and like screw them together to hold the clutch hub . or vise grip. I always have used impact though

AIR + good tools = your best friend for big ol' bolts
