What is a MSO exactly

As some know,I'm in the middle of completing a YFZ 450 purchase,but the thing is,the kid only has a MSO.He said its like a title,I just need to know for my dad,what is exaclty a MSO.
I read up on something about boat MSO's,it says its a temporary title until the boat/vehicle is registered? Does that go for ATV's as well?

Ok so now say i buy the quad,and upon getting the MSO,i have to register it through my insurance company and then i will get the true title for the ATV?

I may be wrong but I thinks it stands for "Manufactures Statement of Origin." Some states dont require a title for a ATV, so all you get is a MSO. You may need to take that peice of paper, the bill of sale, and the ATV in for an inspection at the DMV to get it titled in your state. I bought a trailer a few years back that didnt have a title, just a certificate of origin, All I needed was that and the bill of sale to get it titled and registered.
