I have seen up to 330 kits without case machining.

A powervalve is an addition on the cylinder, it makes and adjustable exhaust port. There is no "size" to the powervalve.

If you can fit a standard 330cc kit (non powervalve) without case machining, then you could also fit a 330cc powervalve cylinder.

I have a few big bore Rs and an Lt500R. You can't beat the Lt's brute power. For pics check it out at http://www.racingquads.com in the classifieds.

Yea but how does it handle and is it as reliable as the good ol R's? and how many times have you rebuilt the motor?

I have had 2 Lt500s. An 88 and 89. I have also had, and still do, have big bore R motors. I have never had to rebuild my LT's. I have never had a gear grenade or any failure on either of the LTs. The R's are not so lucky. I have blown a few bottom ends in races. You would need the aftermarket gears for the tranny due to certain gears being weak. I have had to replace case halves and gears with my 310 and 330 R motors. They are just a very old design that was made back when the 250s didn't make much power. Remember its an early 80s design that was already out dated.
Don't get me wrong, I still race Rs, but a good clean non abused LT is quite reliable. A lot of people don't know what they are doing with the LT motor and you end up with one that might not be as reliable. You don't have to do much to them. If you are any where around missouri I will let you ride them and see for yourself..

i have read that the lt have bearing problems. again these are things i have read not personally experienced. there is no comparison between the 2 the lt is a 500cc 2 stroke with powervalve(i beleive) and i think they hit around 86 stock. athough you will not get the handling you get from the r

As I get more and more into engineering, I'm finding the stuff made 20 years ago is actually much better than the stuff made nowadays.

20 years ago, television sets used to last 10-12 years. Nowadays, they last 3-5.

You buy a 3000W generator from 1980, that sucker will pump out 3000W all day long without a hiccup. You buy a 3000W generator nowadays, it will start groaning at 2800W, and won't put out 3000W continuous without burning up within an hour.

Material science wasn't as good 20 years ago, so engineers tended to err on the side of caution, and most things they built were actually capable of much more than designed for. Nowadays, engineers have to push the limits in order to keep costs down, so they design much closer to the failure point.

So it's not just a saying.............they actually don't make 'em like they used to :) .I know it definately holds true with major appliances.Refrigerators,stoves,etc....

I am glad Honda doesn't make the trannies like they use to or I would be picking pieces of gears out of my 450R....
