I have frequently asked this question to dealers, and they tell me that I could start off with a 450, if I wanted to spend that money. Now its not a problem with what quad I would choose in the 450 class, 450R, but my question is.

I do have experience with driving a quad, such as a blaster, the fastest I have gone on it would be about 45 mph, roughly, in six gear. No matter what type of what kind of quad is decide to purchase, I will be getting lessons from a person who knows how to drive a quad.

My question is if I got lessons, would a 450R be too much for trail riding, jumping? Or is that over kill on me and my money?

By the way, my dealer can get it for me for $5500. Is that a good price?

personally i would get a z400, jumping from a blaser to a 450r is a huge jump. a z400 would be perfect for u.

Well one of the reasons I'm a little weary about getting any kind of 400, is I read on here that they have so many problems. When you get it, you have to gusset the frame, and all this stuff. If I am going to put about 5g just to buy the quad, then a little more money just to get it gusetted, thats rediculous. You shouldn't have to spend about 5g and do that.

first of all i have only heard of the z400 having problems when it first came out. but now its one of the most reliable quads out there. to be honest with u if u have never ridden nething bigger then a blaster, and u switch to a 450r u will kill urself. a z400 would again be the best, the aftermarket for them is cheap, the 450rs on the other hand r very expensive

I have to disagree, switching from a blaster to a 450 will not kill you, i hav ehad many friends do that. Heck my friend has a blaster that hangs with the 450's, its a 240 blaster........... If your just looking for fun, go with a 400, low maintence go with the 400ex. Raw power go for a 450. Easy as that!

ok blasterbabe, first off it sounds like this kid or adult is a bigginer, so me saying he will kill himself on a 450r is a true statement. he even admitted he will be getting lessons. he sounds like a begginer to me. and no begginner should be on a 450 of nekind. yes i have friends that have made the switch from blasters to 450r's only because they race, and they have experience in riding.

i went from a xr100(slower than a blaster) to a 250f(way faster than a 450r) and i had no problems, but i agree that a z400 would be a much better quad for you especial if you are trail riding

I'd say go back down to the bike shop and go sit on a 400ex and a z400.... and see what quad feels more comfortable to you. And I agree with 450r51, I think a 450r is way to much for a beginner... I've had my 400ex for 6 years now, and I couldn't be happier with it. The thing with the 400's is you can always make them faster and better, but I think either one of those quads will last you a long time because they are a great bike:)

well i went from a blaster to a 450r ( my friends) and i did almost kill myself by gunning it 4th gear and spinning the tires :eek2: almost flipped her lol. I suggest a 400ex since your already used to no reverse. The 400ex is a good runner and will be loyal for years. And they make great all around bikes no matter what you do.

i say get a 450r or a z400, like i said in your other thread, the 400ex is great but becareful at first and always wear your protective gear, you will be fine.

it all depends on what you like, if you like yamaha id get a raptor 350, honda id get a 400ex, suzuki and z400 anything in that class

you could ride it. i went from an old LT185 quad to my 400ex. it wasnt a big deal to me. the 450s are nice and 5500 isnt a bad deal for a new one i just looked at the sticker price on one today at my shop at theres are 6499. if your worried about it being to fast just get a 400ex. i got my 400 for sale but its just as fast a 450.

I haven't rode ATV's in 18 years but I'm not a beginner either. I seriously thought about a 450R but got the 400EX. I couldn't be happier with it. Plenty of power, air cooled and reliable.

Where do you ride? What kind of jumping did you experience? How big are you?

I saw that you are 16 years old, and depending on what you want to do with your atv, and where you plan to ride will help us greatly.

I would hope that the dealership is giving an honest suggestion to you after he asked you several questions, but there is no guarantee on that.

As for jumping, I would think the 450R would be a high recommendation. As for trail riding, you may want reverse, which the 400ex now has, and it is an excellent trail riding atv, as is with other makes of atv's.

Good luck!

Im an inexperianced rider who just purchased a brand new 04 400ex. For me the machine is perfect it can do whatever I want it to do, trails, racing, jumping. To me it has the perfect amount of power its there if you want it. Maybe i look at things differantly than most but would you put someone who just got there liscense in a Mclaren ?
