Ok, Im gona tear down my 86' 250R and do a big rebuild. I was thinking of putting the ole 86' piston, 89 crack (mainly rod), and a spacer plate between the cylinder and cases. But now that I think about it, That would make the motor taller, and It's kinda hard to put on a sparkplug now (cuz of the elbow thing stcks way up). Would it now be nearly Impossible to plug in a new plug in my bike without takeing of the gas tank everytime? That would really suck! Or could I find a different ignition elbow thing? Ig so where are they sold?

or dont put in the spacer

What are you talking about? The spacer makes a smoother powerband! Thats much needed on an R, If I have it disassembled, Why not got ahead and do it? Its somthing thats I've always wanted to do to my R. Why do people reply with smarta** coments?

06-05-2002, 11:07 PM
that was what i suddjested, i dought it will catch on the tank, dont take ur pants off, god dam*n

and besides, the 86 has a spacer dosnt it, because to use the 86 stlye piston, u need to space in on the 87-89 motors

06-05-2002, 11:12 PM
also, the spacer increases crank case volume, and u hav to use the 86 style motor setup for it to work, i dont think it changes proformance any, that would be the piston that does it, cant run an 88 motor wit a spacer witout the 86 setup

Sorry man, bad day with people at work.
no the 86 doesnt have a spacer. As of now Im running a complete stock 86 set-up as far a piston and crank.
If you didnt use a spacer on a 87-89 motor it would have like 20:1 compression and woulnt start. So I wana 86 piston, 89 crank, and a spacer to make up the differnece. The 86 piston has a 5mm higher mounting position and the spacer needs to be 5mm. So the whole set-up moves the piston up along with the cylinder and reduces crank pressure. Im purty sure thats all right. I just wana know if I can buy a lil electrical elbow somewhere so I can use the set-up without haveing to take off my gas tank everytime I need to change a plug. Its a purty tight fit right now.
lmk if I missed n e thing

ya its cool, but, i got em reversed i guess, i do that all the time, well, try to use it, and see if it works, i dont see how it would mess up the plug prob, since racers use it, but that could be their chassi is makin up the differnce, also, if u do it, tell me iff it makes a differnce

86 set-up you mean piston? And there wouldnt be any diff in a 86 and an 89 cylinder would there? I know theres the bridged (sp?) intake, but thats doesnt really increase performance. Is there any other difference?

06-05-2002, 11:17 PM
i would think about runnin one, but i like the snappy power, smooth jus isnt as enjoyable to me

Alot of guys like the set-up. I talked to one and he said it really smoothed the powerband and therefore got more power to the ground. Thats the problem I'm haveing now. I drag 400ex's and I loose soemtimes cuz no traction, I dig (literally) 6 inch holes in the ground and the 400 just runs away (till i catch em).

06-05-2002, 11:19 PM
im pretty sure they are the same, cept for the intake, might hav diffent ports, and someone said the spark plug things wer diffent, not sure on that though, and the spacer, the crank and piston changed, hence the spacer plate.

06-05-2002, 11:20 PM
yea, but, looks cool spinnin all over, and then still smokin em when they are ahead of u!!!

Its not smooth, jump smoothER. Just smooth enough to make the tires stick. I can make my tamers spin easily on ASFAULT!

Thats not useing the clutch ANY

06-05-2002, 11:21 PM
yea, mine spin too, i like it, slide those corners like nothin

stocktires
06-05-2002, 11:22 PM
Yea, looks kewl, But makes you mad when you loose cuz of it. But any sliding makes you go SLOWER, traction=good

06-05-2002, 11:24 PM
yea, thats true, but on a long rode, it dont matter any, now im gunna see what addin 2 teeth in the rear is gunna do, i killed my sunstar 36.

Wow, I always tear up the front sproket, not tha rear, till i got sidewinders and Its all good now.
How do you like the R compared to the ole 440 you had?

06-05-2002, 11:29 PM
im gunna get some sidewinders soon, need em

well, the 440 had aton more low end grunt and tork, but once the R clicks the band, its gone, leaves the ol 440 in the dust, but in the woods,id bet it would be close

I ride my frineds 400 sometimes. the front end always wants to come up, But as far as top-end, The 400 seems very very, uhhhh weak! But on an R wheelies arent the best.
Sidewinders are awesome! Dont need much adjusting, and They'll last almost forever!
Spark plug things different on different cylinders? you mean threads or what? Im useing a cool head so it doesnt matter. I know all the diffs of the motors, just thought the porting may be a lil diff.

06-05-2002, 11:39 PM
im not sure whats differnt, jus i HEARD that they where somehow, im gunna be usin a cool head, hasnt come in yet

What dome you get?

06-05-2002, 11:42 PM
well, its taken forever, i hav it written down somewhere, i cant even remeber, but i got my works back

Hey man,
Thanx for tha diagram! Have you dont this set-up? I wana do it quite badly.

Yes I have been using the spacer plate and 86 piston setup for over a year. It works well for MX.

You can use it with any year clyinder as long as you have a longrod and 86 piston.

Kewl, do you have trouble changing the spark plug? Is it a really tight fit? Im tearing down my R now and I mas as well go ahead and put a long rod in it cuz I always wanted this set-up. Does it only work good for MX?

No trouble changine the plug at all. You need a longrod, spacer plate, 86 style piston, 2 base gaskets, longer studs, and longer dowels. You can get the parts from Nac's racing.

kewl! I know the set-up, I say some of those awesome lil NGK connectors, Im gonna try one of those.

The spacer plate set-up is In my opinion one of the best things to do to an r. You can get the spacer plates in a few different sizes also not just a 5mm you can go down to 4.5mm and 3.5mm also. Don't worry about the power not coming on hard either it does slow the port timing a little by raising the cylinder (ports) but it will still turn on nice and strong, it just really widens the power alot and it turns on sooner. Another benefit of running the spacer and an 86 piston is the oversizes you gain, the stock 87-89 pistons only go up to .80 over, with the 86 and spacer you can bore up .120 over so you gain a little extra life out of the cylinder also. Another trick when installing this set-up is only run one base gasket on the bottom side of the plate and use indian head shellac sealer on the top of the plate it will bring the compression up a little, with the 5mm plate youre squish clearance will be around 65- 70 thousandths, when you eliminate one gasket you will usually lower that number by about 20 thousandths and gain some compression. i would also consider a ram valve, it really straightens out the fuel flow to the cylinder also. About the spark plug i never had any trouble getting to it. Always thought it was one of the easiest one I had seen. Try changing a plug on a kawasaki tecate!

yea, 400ex plgs are a lil tough sometimes too.
I dont think I wana run no second base gasket. I want this bike reliable! Thanx for your help, but It seems like all you have to say about it is good things! I havent heard anything bad about either. I guess I'll see, thanx

il hav to check into that thing someay
