well i think the main reason people do it is because the butterfly causes alot of turbulence within the carb and doesnt let air flow smoothly through it. i took my choke off and i did in fact feel a difference in throttle response, some people dont but some people do. my 400ex doesnt start any harder either, almost starts easier since ive done it :macho

What he said.....

I took the choke off mine about a week ago, I noticed an improvement in throttle response and power.

Time well spent.

Do you have to re-jet after taking the choke off?

Most guys are taking it off in conjunction to putting in a 40 or 42 pilot jet. You don't have to rejet, but you are probably going to have a little trouble when it starts getting colder again...

then yo jetting is wrong or your tryin to start it the wrong way. I think the choke on the 400ex is the worst thing about it,,it never worked for me on both my 400ex's..

If your located in an area with moderate weather temps,,say around 70 degrees and you can't push the gas 2 times and hit the starter button and it won't start then you need ta fine tune your carb. I have no choke installed and I can go out in 50 degree weather and do the above and she comes to life and purrs like a kitten..

Its about an average of 90 degrees here. I can get her started just can't keep her started.
