I was wondering if anyone can diagnose my computer. I recently downloaded limewire, then downloaded movies/music and my comp. got super slow and started locking up. I uninstalled it, but now I'm getting pop up ads like crazy. One after another in constant succession. Everytime I click a link it locks up. Please help

How are you getting on the internet ??

i dunno if u can d/l it but, if u can d/l spysweeper. But, if its locking up like u say it is when u click something. IF you can go to all programs - accsesories- system tools-system restore. Then restore it to the point where it wasnt messed up.

If your running XP or NT or 2000 etc etc....

Hit Cntl Alt Delete, let the task manager pop up, look under the Processes tab and end process on anything that looks funky like Barginbuddy or names to do with advertising or just funky things like DFWSFD.exe

no not end any processes that listed as SYSTEM under the username....

Thre is something running in the background thats messing with your browser (which is most probably IE)

do that then goto page and download and run it..

If you have ended everything suspicious and you cant still surf properly without locking up then reboot and hit F8 and go into the system in SAFE MODE W/ Network Support.

This will load only the essentials and allow you to surf, download it and run it..

My suggestion to you (actually everyone using windows) is to use a different browswer than IE... like Avant Browser. IE and the way it works and all its Backdoors (probably on purpose for MS to spy on your *****) is i think NOT the way to go.

I got so fed up with MS i switched over to Linux 6 years ago, just as easy to install, looks tons better and performs circles around MS and every application is FREEE! and you dont have to worry about virus' and spyware.

08-13-2005, 12:06 PM
i use mozilla firefox or something and its pretty cool

Have you heard of a version of Linux that can be put on a CD...basically boot from the CD just to try Linux without installing it on a partition of your hard drive?

There are plenty of them. Try http://www.ubuntulinux.org ...That is who I use. They have a bootable and a normal installation of linux.

Linux really isn't practical for every day use, though. Most people don't have time to learn how to configure everything, so instead they use Windows where they can fly through everything. I use both, but I use Windows more because I'm more productive.

I found a version called KNOPPIX (newest rev)... just spending about 2 hours with it and I'm hooked. If it has all of the support I need, I could see myself getting rid of Windows.

I will be setting up a partition for Linux very soon.

Does anyone know if Linux has full support for the Ipod? Is there a version of ITunes? (required for my wife... :D )

Not practical????? maybe you should stop using CD only LInux... i have ZERO reason for using MS... there is applications for everything... and IF (big IF) you cant you can always run WINE and run the windows application.

I cant see how people deal with that unstable crap called Windows.

Configuring??? For the past 2 years Linux did not need configuring, it installs just like any windows version.... put the cd in and it does it on its own and you have your desktop ready to run..

Unlike windows which sometimes doesnt have the right drivers for certain things in your computer, Linux always does.

To try it out before I setup my drive for it...

It took me less than 10 min to download and burn a bootable CD....then I was up and running. Best way to try something IMO.

It will do it for you, it will make it dual boot and you can use whatever you feel like windows or linux, you can always remove the linux partition after.

But dont go downloading a stupid linux distrubution like the one listed above...

I use Mandrake 10.1 (now known as Mandriva)

www.mandriva.com

08-13-2005, 08:24 PM
Some screenshots of Mandriva 10.1 running KDE 3.4 desktop.

Typical look during install process (just like windows only nicer and no drums and sticks :) )

For every day use??? you mean things like MS office, Excel, Outlook etc etc etc (typical office applications)

Well lets see it comes with K-Office which does everything microsoft office does and also reads and saves to the same format ;)

again i say, i see no reason to use MS.

Mandriva does...

you have to be careful which distribution you use... you want one thats well supported like Redhad / Mandriva / Fedora... the more its supported the better off you are... unlike windows (only Billy boys working on stuff) the COMMUNITY builds and makes things better, the way YOU want it not the way THEY want it.

if i were you i would download the ISO files (image files) for the 3 cd's for mandrake or order it, its very cheap.

if you need the link to the iso files let me know i can post it for you. Its 3 CD's

08-13-2005, 08:33 PM
Ok i looked at KNOPPIX linux

Its based on Debian not Redhat..

Debian is built more for Power Networking not Desktopping, so it will be slow on the Desktop area.... Only get that one if your doing networking/routing/web hosting.

Also not much 3rd party packages for Debian... you want Redhat based Linus (RPM Files)

08-13-2005, 08:43 PM
here you go.

I have the CD's for this but have not installed it yet... its Xandros
http://www.xandros.com/

Its bad***** very stable and will run any windows application if you ever happen to need it (which you wount) but just saying that for the windows junkies.

When you order an Alienware machine and specify Linux Operating system this is what it comes with....

Desktop Screenshot
http://www.xandros.com/images/screenshots/v3/desktop_original.png

08-13-2005, 08:49 PM
Xandros is Debian based so you cant use RMP's..... but it has as usual the built in always up to date list of all applications for it, simply search what you want and it goes and gets it.. (FREE!)

if your using a Redhat based you can always goto www.rpmfind.com and get what you want but that also has the application browser built in so you can search for stuff that way as well, doubt you will need to download anything as it already comes with eveyrthing you want.

Thank you for the info!

Right now I'm downloading the DVD version (2.4gigs) of Mandriva Linux Limited Edition 2005.

I cant believe I've waited this long to try this...coming from a computer nut... :D

08-13-2005, 08:58 PM
If you want to get fancy and make MS look like they dont know what they are doing.

Download and crack a program for linux called VMWARE

what it does is while your in linux (already taking up memory) it will load a vitual machine... have that virtual machine boot up by CD, put in your windows CD whatever you want even XP or 2000
and it will install that windows as Ext3 on your linux partition and run it in a window :)

FUNNY THING IS WINDOWS WILL RUN FASTER IN THAT MODE THAN IF YOU INSTALLED IT ON THE MACHINE BY ITSELF.... GOING TO SHOW YOU THAT FAT/NTFS IS THE SLOWWWWEST FILE SYSTEM KNOWN TO MAN AND UNSTABLE TO BOOT.

dude sounds like your comp is fu(ked, this will take awhile but if you really want to do it yourself first thing i would do is down load hijackthis once you run it copy and paste all the results to this site, if they say any thing is questionable post it and ill tell you if its safe to delete it or not

Yes sir, not practical. I dual boot Windows and Ubuntu, I don't use boot CD's. It takes time to learn to install apps if you are not using the application manager. If you can't even use Windows correctly and keep it virus free, what makes you think they will be able to learn how to use any distrobution of linux?

I cant see how people deal with that unstable crap called Windows.

It works great for me. I haven't had any problems, but it takes more than an idiot to keep it working right.

Configuring??? For the past 2 years Linux did not need configuring, it installs just like any windows version.... put the cd in and it does it on its own and you have your desktop ready to run..

Say you use a dial-up service such as AOL. How are you going to use it? RIGHT it's not compatible! Either way, you have to know a something about working in a terminal to set up other dial-up connections. Thats IF your modem is compatible with Linux.

But dont go downloading a stupid linux distrubution like the one listed above...

Wow... MOFO or anyone else I suggest you try as many as possible before you choose.

For every day use??? you mean things like MS office, Excel, Outlook etc etc etc (typical office applications)

Openoffice.org has me covered there, I do more than that. There are a lot of annoyances that I don't want to take the time to get used to if I don't have to. I like to use Trillian and so far there isn't a messenger for Linux that matches its functionality. By functionality, I don't mean connect to several messaging servers at once, I mean the features it has. I could go on with different things that have bothered me with Linux, but it's not worth it.

I suggest you not look at his biased opinion, and try everything for yourself before you make any permanent changes. Do as much research as possible before you switch to any *nix operating system. Do as much reading and learning with boot CD's as you can before hand to make sure everything will work how you want it to. Good luck, and try http://www.linuxquestions.org forums. They are pretty helpful.

Too late, he is hooked on Linux ;)

yet another one converted :)

An oh yeah fender bender.... seems your a MS freak so you will knock LInux any way you can... Its not that we dont know how to keep windows running properly, its constantly having to maintain it and constantly check for updates and ways to keep spam out..... you dont have to do this with Linux...

AS for AOL, its very easy to connect to AOL in linux... PengAOL is just one of them and there are tons more.

I doubt very highly any Linux junkie would be using AOL anyways.

As for terminal sessions, thats the fun part of linux once you start hacking ;) and if there isnt a rpm for it then its probably not worth installing anyways from my experience.

OMG Linux rules WTF MICRO$OFT WINBLOWS AM I RITE???!!?!

I never said I was a Microsoft freak, I told you I use both. It is just more convinient for me to use Windows. I don't ever have any problems with Spyware, Adware, or any other type of malware or viruses. It really isn't hard to use a couple of scanners every once in a while, especially if they are automatic, even if it doesn't pick anything up (and mine never do). All I was doing was throwing out my opinion. People should decide for themselves not go by other peoples opinions.
