I have a motor for sale that has a 5 speed tranny. anyone heard of it? Are theses a collectors item motor? its the black 85 style motor. no egraved 1N23456 shift pattern on the stator cover. i have seen one of these motors before that friend bought and was hard to believe. now i have had one for awhile. now i am downsizing the R parts. probably will regret it. but i have several motor parts also for sale. selling for reasonable costs email me with needs and i will get back to you. i will try and get some pics soon.

sounds like to a air cooled motor to me, those were 5 speed, does the head have huge fins on it? does the motor look like the one in this bike

Its not very rare, it probably came from a 1985 atc250r which had a 5 speed trans

a 85 atc 250r has a 6 speed tranny, the 81-84's had 5 speed.

how is it you have some extremely rare R motor that none of us have ever heard of? I have 1 and its a 6 speed , my buddys 85 is a 6speed, and every last watercooled R I have EVER rode is a 6 speed:confused:

Are the gear ratios diffrent? and how do you go about rebuilding it? where do you find this "special tranny"? or parts for it, some R parts are getting harder to find:confused:

(ps, how can I wager$$ on it online w/o checking it out for myself?:D ) Your profile says your my age so that slims the chances of BS:D

Well for one look at the stator cover in the pic? your 85 motors say 1n23456 on them. You do not see this on my motor for sale. I am thinking they where 5 speed for half a year in 85. I had a friend that bought a motor just like this and we where puzzled also. never seen before. you can change out gear sets to a 6 speed if needed. that is what my friend did when he rebuilt after a hard years racing. A year after my friend got that motor i bought this 85 off ebay and could not believe i ran into another 5 speed tranny(what are the odds?) I argued with someone before about this in a forum but i have the proof just cannot see inside motor to show you. tell me have you ever seen a stator cover without the shift pattern engraved on it?

Ive noticed this before myself, but figured the #'s were an update (or for noobs to a standard shift pattern haha)

If I can get my POS cam to work web-cam style... I'll post a pic

I have never seen a 5 spd. Your shift fork is probably bent and its only letting you shift to fifth.

Open it up, I want to see this. Just pull the clutch cover and basket off and count the detents on the wheel at the end of the shift drum. If it's actually a 5-speed, there should be 6. If it's a 6-speed there will be 7.
