Will backing off the preload make the shock a little softer or is it mainly for ride height? I just put the 01 raptor shock on my 300ex and the preload was dialed down to the bottom a little over half. It seems a little too stiff I was wondering if I backed the preload off a bit if that would soffen it up much. As it is right now the frame sits perfectly level. I weigh 165 lbs

If you already got the right height and the quad feels stiff, the spring rate is too hard. You will need to replace the coils with a softer one.

So the preload dosen't affect the stiffness of the shock? It works awsome off jumps so I don't think I would wan't to go with a softer spring that might be too soft then.

It shouldn't, but it does very very slightly. So it is almost unnoticeable.
This shock probably takes the jumps good because it was originally valved for a heavier quad.
Later, you may want to consider revalving the shock for the weight of your quad, style of riding, etc. Then you'll notice what you were missing.
