I hear of people taking the lid off there Airbox. What does this exactly do. I suppose it would increase airflow witch is a good thing. BUT wouldnt more dirt get in the airbox and clog up there filter faster. Would it be a good idea to have a K&N air filter or any other high flow air filter before you do this.

Well actually putting in a K&N will allow more dirt to get in. I ride with mine off because mine his jetted so high. I clean my filter after every two rides. Taking the lid off will add just a tiny bit more power but not enough to notice.

More air into the motor combined with more fuel equals more power provided you have the correct A/F Ratio.

You also get cooler air, instead of sucking the hot air from up near the head.

fuel / air ratio.....the more fuel you need the more air you need. Thus a stock motor won't see much improvement with the lid off.
i run ...Remember you gotta keep the mud and water out.

I find alot of bikes that have the air box cover off , even when they are jetted for it don't run right , it seems like they don't pull as hard as they would with the air box cover.

Just drill holes, and rejet if you have a 300. 300 stock filters and exhaust are very restrictive.

I agree with what 92 250x er just said.

The 300ex stock filter, headpipe and muffler suck. Get a Uni 2 stage or K&N and Outerwear for the filter, and get a new headpipe and the slip-on of your choice. You'll have to increase the main jet (122 is stock, try 125 or 128). Next thing is airbox mods. I'm a hair on the rich side with the 125 main, stock airbox, and the mods I mentioned above, but I still got a nice improvement over stock form. I tried it a couple weeks ago without the airbox lid and was definitely impressed. I could pull the front wheels off the ground every shift except from 4th to 5th. I'm going to either replace the lid with one of the aftermarket filter styles, or add a few 1" holes and pop-in filters in the factory lid to feed some more air to the K&N and Outerwear.
