What do some of you guys have and how do you like it, im lookin for sumthin around a grand. I used one of these (http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=7280541&type=product&productCategoryId=cat01174&id=1118839462978) the other day and i thought it was pretty awesome. I loved the wireless capabilities!

if computers were like cars...

windows could go on every single road and be able to take detours and shortcuts.

apple would be able to go twice as fast, but only go down a few roads.

Spend the extra $$$ and get a IBM Thinkpad... if you cant swing it, go DELL.

I've had several laptops over the years and these two seem to be the best - IBM being top notch.

I had an IBM T40 previously and it was great. My current one is a T30 and it's a real treat. The T30 is sllooww. Oh well, my company pays for them so I can't complain too much...

I just did some Dell Lookin, and their prices were pretty good, sounds like they have a good rep also.

I'm Likin the Inspirion 6000 for $916, Its got alot of good chit that comes with it. Free Shipping...Free Printer...etc

On the subject of Apples......they suck.

The computers suck, and the Ipods are worse. If you get an Mp3 player, get a rio or something, not an ipod.

Anyways, I have a Compaq Presario 2500, we payed 1,600 for it about a year and a half ago, so they may be down in price now.

Its fast, not quite fast enough to play graphic simulations like Flight Simulator 2004 and have very good texture, but for your everyday music, internet, school computer it works really good

Video editing.........its alright, a few delays but not to bad

I have an alienware area 51 now and its the biggest POS I've ever had. Thier customer sevice sucks. before that I had a dell inspiration and befoer that aan IBM thinkpad very good in both IMO. Customer service on both were top notch:D

if you built one yourself you could get one twice as good, but get a custom one, Fully upgradable and you can have anything you want.

i thought the best thing about alienware was the customer service. you';d hope to god when you pay as much for one of those things that yo uwould at least get some good custoemr service or a really really good laptop

My brother has one... just got it a few months ago. Its freakin amazing - speaking from quality and speed. The only reason I do not recommend them is due to the price. So far his customer service has been great!

Check out www.techbargains.com . They have all kinds of manufacturer rebates/coupons that aren't always advertised (or they are advertised as the "big sale" that stores have). A week or two back, they had $600 coupon for Dell Inspirion's that were $1499+.

I have a Dell lattitude, it runs fine but it's extremely hot! The keyboard area is really hot! Did I mention it's freakn' hot!!??

Dell's tend to not get very good reviews either in the different pc mags.

I am shopping for a laptop for my son right now, I believe I'm going to buy a Acer AS5002 from Circuit City. Acer brand apparently is pretty good and it is cheaper than the other's due to not rolling in a bunch of sofware with it like the other's do.

Go with a IBM they are the best they are actually called Lenovo.
Toshiba is pretty good as well as Sony.

I prefer HP second, then Dell

I work at one of the largest IT resellers in the nation. I sell mostly business class machines and some home use.

We have a Toshiba Satellite with a 17 inch widescreen. I love it but I think it's over your budget.

She's talking to her friends about it, and her ex-best friend asks about it (he's a technology whore & know-it-all). He says, "What kind did you get? (Toshiba) Oh. You should've got an Apple.
