I have a 450r with HMF slip-on, K&N filter, no airbox lid and a DynoJet jet kit. I have the needle in the perscribed postion and a 170 MJ. When i first start my bike and give it gas, it will cut out and shoot out black smoke like its rich but once it's warm it seems to run fine, doesn't smoke at all, but does smell a tad like its rich. should i mess with the needle or the Main Jet? I haven't touched the pilot but i don't think i should. I'm stumped so any info would help please!!

BTW, i live at the beach so maybe around 100-200 ft. elevation...

I would run stock pilot, stock needle in stock postion (3rd clip) and a 175 kehin main, try that.

If your just starting it the quad, and it is basically in idle, this has nothing to do with your Main Jet.

When rejetting, you also need to adjust the mixture screw.

Here is a link that has good info:

Good Luck!

hey, thanks for the replies! i figured it was either the needle or i needed to mess with the A/F screw, now i'm guessing that the farthers out you turn the screw, the more air/less fuel is put into the mixture?? thanks for your help again...

oh, i see, the further out, the more open the fuel valve is since all that screw is, is an adjustable fuel valve basically... makes sense... thanks for all the help again, i'll mess with it tomorrow and see if i can't get it atleast a little better.
