engine noises

when initially starting up my 2002 400ex the engine ticks until it is hot, then i get a different kind of noise more like a whine. The noises are only at idle. Is the problem the valves need adjustment or is there more i need to look at? I have had the quad for a few years and bought it used dont know, if ever, when the valves were adjusted. Is there any way i did damage not adjusting for so long? i

It sounds like your cam chain is stretched... Replace it with a crf450 timing chain. It is stronger and cheaper. Also replace the cam chain tensioner at the same time. All parts should be around $50 from service honda (http://www.servicehonda.com) .
