I just bought myself a new 2005 predator le and I bought my wife a new 2006 yfz450. I ordered a new k and n air filter and a prefilter for the 500. I called the yamaha dealer and asked the service tech if the 2005 and 2006 air filters were the same for the 450s because I was going to get my wife a k and n also. The tech said that they recomend a oiled foam filter and not to put a k and n filter on. I read a few threads here and there and everyone is about 50% for foam and 50% for k and n. I ride mainly in the dunes. What should I buy?

I would use the K&N...as long as you clean it out every once and a while, it should be fine. When cleaning use the K&N power kit it works great. I hope this helps. I run one on my 400ex for a year now it it works real well for me!

i personally wouldnt use a K&N. Especially in sand. Just be sure to keep it oiled and clean with a prefilter and dont take the airbox lid off while riding!

k&n filters are great. easier to clean than foam filter and flow better. get a prefilter and your fine. clean the prefilter (just plain soap and water) everyride and your k&n should take a while to get dirty. i have to clean my foam's more than my k&n's.

I love my k&n, as long as you aren't lazy in cleaning it, it will be fine.

i only use K&N on my quads, (never ofered them for bikes untill recently), but if i were you i would search for one of the ten other threads on this subject and delete this one cause you just stired up alot of $hit

i didnt mean to offend you, but its just that there is a HUGE k&n vs uni thing on this site, and everytime some one ask this question it ends in a flame fest

No problem. I read the other threads and none of them said anything about sand. I'm not worried about horsepower I just don't want my engine to get sand in it.:)

Well, then. It sounds like UNI would be your best choice...

I've used both.

K&N's are easier to clean, and have a bit more flow.

Uni's filter a little better and don't have to be cleaned as often. You should be cleaning and inspecting after every major outing anyway so that point is really moot.

I personally run K&N's w/ Prefilter & Prefilter Lid. Just less time consuming for me to clean and dry after our weekend trips/races.

i chunked my hunk of sh*t k&n and got a uni, if ur runnin k&n, might as well just take it off and run no air filter cuz it wont stop sh*t from gettin to your engine

foam filters are the way to go

I just talked to a local shop that works on atv's for racing and he said that the k&n are fine for sand as long as they have a precharger, he said that the yfz should have a esr breather and to loose the airbox and rejet. The polaris should have the same thing. The yfz is stock and the pred has a white bros. pipe that came with the le model. So i guess I will go with the k&n. Thanks for all the help.

running a K&N is stupid. you won't notice a difference between a K&N and a foam filter at all plus you pay was more for the K&N, and it doesnt filter as good, and you have to buy prefilters ect. id say go with the foam type.

Your not going to notice any power change between any filter or even without a filter.

I just replaced my K&N with an Amsoil and like the Amsoil better simply because it's easier to put on.

I have noticed some dust in the airboot with the K&N, I haven't used the Amsoil long enough to see if it lets any more or less dirt in.

I run my K&N thru the washer and dryer! It bounces around like heck, makes alot of noise, but it sure smells pretty!

Then why not use the stock filter? They filter better.

I do agree though that you arent going to "feel" a difference between the K&N and Uni filters. Thus it's a matter of preference.

I garuntee more people put a lot more carbon dust in their engines by running too rich, than dust ever enters the system by running a K&N.
