Hey guys, here's the deal. Got a 2001 400EX. Blew 'er up and bored 'er to a 416. Ok, got the piston in the motor, the rings on right, and the arrow facing the exhaust side of the motor.. When I put the piston in, I was told to spray WD-40 on it to make it slide in easier.. It did. Went in fine. Put the motor back together, then I cranked her over.. Cranked it over about 4 times. On the 4th time, it made a real muffled "Poof" noise and smoke arose from the engine. Not good. Maybe this isn't to big of a deal as maybe my quad just ignited the WD-40 and that was all that I saw.. But it could be something big. Also, I tried to put this thing in time by myself.. So this also may be the problem. I had no idea how to put in time, so I just gave it a shot. If someone can give me the exact, precise steps to putting this motor in time.. Please write me some steps or something.. I can do everything but get this thing in time.. Thanks in advance guys!!

to time it, take the 2 allen head covers off your right left side engine case, one to turn the flywheel and the other being the window to see the marks on the flywheel. turn the flywheel counterclockwise, slowly rotate until you see the T mark on the flywheel, at this point, youll be moving to the cam. on the cam sprocket you will find 3 lines. One left, right and north. lol. One should be up, and the left and right should be flush with the cylinder head, and as long as your motor is at TDC, (t mark) you should have it right there... the cam lobes will be facing down towards the motor

i dont know how clear those are but i think there isa tutorial or something around here..

good luck

sounded like good directions to me.

Anyone know why the motor would just make that "poof" noise? And then smoke rise from it?

Alright, got 'er adjusted. Now, for the valves.. They ping like ****. I don't have a feeler gauge... Is there anything I can use to go by to adjust them instead of one of these things?

nope, just run to a local hardware store or auto parts store tomorrow, they usually cost around $4.

i swear i just had the exact same problem with my 416 2 days ago. i thought i somehow had the cam 180 degrees off but i double checked and realized i was dead on. then i remembered how when i cleaned my valves of carbon and oil crap that it would deffinately affect the valve clearance. after adjusting the clearance my 416 fired right up and i looked like a dumbass. valve clearance is deffinately a very basic and overlooked issue
