this is gonna sound stupid for someone who has built and run about 6 motors now, but, im new to the 450r (i just got it about a week ago) and i havent picked up a manual yet...

so heres my question, do the 450rs valves (valve clearance) need to be adjusted? and if so, do the have tappets that you screw in or out to make the clearance surface bigger or smaller? or does the cam have shims to adjust the clearance?

sorry for such a newb question

Yes they do have to be adjusted with any aftermarket cam and or motor mods. You use the shims to make up for the clearance. Can get shim kits for 70 bucks.

do they need to be adjusted periodically? like every 20hours? i remember on a friends raptor, he had to do it about every 20 hours or so (reccomended he said)

well with any cam mod you are supposed to install the cam check clearance, fix the clearance, then do the break in period for the cam and then check the clearance again making sure there isnt any play. But as far as I know you dont have to check them all that often if you do it right. Maybe if your an all out racer you should but personally I dont unless it needs it or if I am doin somethin by that part of the motor.

Oh god. It was just a statement man. I wasnt askin for a truckload of broken down motors after that. Just a lil harmless joke!! Ya 450r motors break along with YFZ's and 400ex and 300ex's and banshees and raptors. Every motor can break!!!

Ya i am real touchy with who I take a motor to for maintenance. Some people just dont care and stuff like that happens. Hope you didnt have to pay for those new parts. That ignorant mechanic did I hope.

yea no motor is bullet proof, i had my crank go and ruin my WHOLE ( YES WHOLE ) motor...I think honda recomends them be checked or adjusted every 10 hours ( valves )!! Mine got really bad really quick, which i race alot and practice alot!! I have heard The trx's valves need to be checked pretty regulary but thats just what i heard, I always try to keep my motor fresh,it really makes a difference!!

Yeah, that looks pretty nasty. What is the orange color where the rod split?

The different color is the way they look from the factory..
All of em look like that..Most of em have a blue looking end on
them..

COOL!! What caused that??

I know this sounds crazy but i love really blowing up a motor good. I disintagrated a piston inside my old cr500/trx once. All the pieces of the piston were in the pipe and in the crank case! The rod was stuck in the side of the cylinder. The dome of the piston was smashed into the head so hard it took a hammer to seperate them...oh it was a good one...lol

I believe that a poorly tuned engine ,with all the poping and banging put alot of strees on the rod !

Guys if your motor sounds like ***** and is back firing you may end up with the same results!
