Many of you have seen the pics as this restoration progressed. Well, after eight years, it's just about done. The only thing that is missing is the Honda decal that goes on the front of the hood. It is on the way, hopefully I should have it in hand and on the quad in the next two weeks. This has been a very enjoyable and sometimes difficult experience. Finding some of the parts nearly drove me insane. I guess it's time to start looking for my next project. Maybe my old Tri-Z or an ATC. Or I could do an '88.... :D
Hope you enjoy, let me know what you think.

The motor is untouched, it is brand new, never started. I bought it back when I started restoring the quad when they were still available. If you look at it really close you can see some of the factory markings on it. Other new items include the front shocks, all plastic, tank, seat, and the entire rear brake system. Plus nearly every nut and bolt (all OEM Honda) and too many other parts to list.

If a perfectly restored 250r couldn't win, then there is something wrong.

And the problem would be all the little kids that have no idea the value or rarity, or the time and money that went into this 250r. They ar just gonna be like o huh it's stock:confused:  I would love for an all original 250r to win the quad of the month.

Thats why my 89 is the way that it is, I love the fact that it is so rare. I hope we've all noticed what totally stock r's bring $$$$.

I didn't keep a real accurate record of every little piece, but I believe it was between 8 and 9 thousand.

That's funny, I would have thought you dropped about a dime on it. Good stuff.

How did you do the frame though? Painted or powdercoated and what paint. My 86 is pretty much dead stock except fmf pipe but the frame is getting a bit rusty and I want to redo it this winter.

What are your plans for it?

The frame is powdercoated. I took the headstay, which wasn't faded, to my powdercoater and went through all of his books until we found an exact match to the Honda red. My only plans for it are to have it sit under a cover in the back of my garage. I have no intention of ever starting it or riding it.

Ok, I gotta know how you got the gold rims. I've wanted a set of those for my 300. Did you just have some kind of coating done on a set of polished DID's?

They are anodized gold, and they are the stock 250r rims.

I figured they were the stockers, I was just wondering if you had the finish done on a set of the stockers that were originally the polished finish. If so, where'd you have it done at? I'm getting a set of the ITP T-9's, and was trying to figure out how to have the gold finish done on them.

Are you in MI and is it the one from Scott?
How much?

2StrokeFreak

Yes I'm in MI.

Yes its from Scott.

Depends how you want it. I bought it with the intent to trail ride it. I never rode it with various stock parts on it. I replaced and boxed up the bars, Belly pan, swingarm skid, key switch, PJ carb, reed cage.

Replaced skids with OMF stuff. Upgraded carb to 36mm PWK, V-Force cage, FMF pipe, TCII silencer, and a second seat with OMF latch.

Also standard length durablue axle, hubs, anti-fade, and wave rotor. A set of polished C-Series wheels with Holeshot XC fronts
and XCR rears.

The way its set up now it rips in the woods, but its too nice for me to to ride in the woods. Thats why I'm thinking of selling.

PM me your # if interested, we can talk prices.

Mike

Rich250R, I have a couple questions...
1) What is the proper rear grab bar for 86-87, straight or turned up at an angle? I have seen on the microfiche that they are different part numbers from 86 to 87, and my stock 86 is straight but my stock 87 is curved up like yours. What is the deal?

2) I am looking for a replacement fuel tank for my 87 which is blue and faded. Most other blue tanks I have seen for sale are also faded. Has Honda discontinued these tanks? Any suggestions on finding one?

Thanks
Kyle

PS - nice restoration!

If you know where I can find an 86-87 headlight cage or blue fuel tank in good shape, email me at kyonak@earthlink.net

Thanks

PS - nice restoration!

That's a really good question on the grab bar, I have always been under the assumption that 86 and 87 were the same. All of my 86 250R's came with stock grab bars and they were all angled (I believe). One of my bars is straight but it looks to have been repaired at some time. I know that both the 86 and 87 part numbers are discontinued. If this is the wrong bar on this quad I would like to get the correct one. The blue tanks are discontinued, along with the blue seat. Finding a blue tank will be difficult, but if you have a good dealer, they can run a search of other dealers and see if anybody in the country has one. You might want to check eBay Canada and eBay Austrailia.

Hey Rich250r, I found a nice non-faded blue tank AND a headlight cage on ebay. They are both used, of course, but in great shape. Yes, I found out that Honda has discontinued alot more parts than I originally thought!!

Thanks for your tips and I salute you for your appreciation of the stock R...

i know you have gotten many compliments guys but just add one more

these wheelers are some of the best restore projects ive seen yet it looks as if you found one in a crate somewhere brand new from the factory.

i just want o stress that i am a 2 stroke guy and if you dont mix the gas it aint fast right guys well anyway i was worried they were going out of style and everybody is sellin there 250r but i am very very very pleased and proud to see these great machines i hope you show them off like it was a $20.000 race machine cause you know they are better cause anybody can build a mx'er but you took the time to find all the parts to do a restore job and do it right and you just cant see them everyday

tip of the hat to you guys im very proud and i hope i get thew time to restore one myself but for now i just have really clean built up "R's" but
