youd think the color should be the same no matter what. because white is always going to be lean, black is always going to be rich, and tan or brown should always be perfect. its all based on heat, not what fuel your running?

some would call me (the esr killer) we built this bike to hurt the feeling of those with 450r's and yfz 450's so far it has done its job, even to those with modded machines. we were really impressed with how this bike runs. i did all the engine work myself which i am proud of. i am suprised how the thing revs, and now that it is on alcohol it pulls so hard it is amazing. my name is ross. thats all i'll tell because i am paranoid of losing my bikes to a theif.

Understandable. I run a 400ex too but speed and power wise its nothing compared to yours im sure. Once this sleave is shot Im thinking about the 440 kit with a higher rev limiter and lighter piston. Not real sure tho, I still want a reliable bike since I race XC.

Keep adding fuel untill you start to loose power, then go back a jet size or two.

Try adding some nitro, and then the fun begins, use no more than 20%. with the 400 cases.

the tip on jetting was a good idea, i probably will run a little bigger jet than i am right now, and start using a power jet to compensate. as for the 440's i haven't had one run with me yet. besides from what i have seen using the lightened pistons is not the way to go. i just saw a 465 with a $3500 engine explode after 5 minutes of running. the piston ripped the pin out and destroyed the rod, crank, sleeve, and cases. cutting on the piston i think is too risky. you also have to remember when you get into the bigger bore engines to componsate by rebalancing for the added bob weight. i know some have even built the 505's and had great luck with them, but did they lighten their piston? who knows.

I read like a 3 page article about a 440 kit and they used a special wisco piston. I cant remember off the top of my head what was special about it besides the fact that it was lightened but they said it was necessary. The responce time was greatly improved by the weight loss. Just what I read? How often do you change your plug on a 4 stroke when you race? I know they last alot longer then 2 stroke but I dont want to have one foul out in a race.

as long as your bike is jetted right you won't really need to change them much at all. i usually give it a new plug when i change my oil. now that i am running alcohol i chang the oil more often. you could run the irridium plugs they last longer and are supposed to create a better spark. if you are racing i would change it between every race, you wouldn't want to lose a race because the plug. when i got my bike the plug had been in it for about two years and still looked fine.

the 465 piston has a releif cut out under the top creating room for the rod it is line an inch wide from front to bak on the piston. alot of people cut some of the piston skirt for clearence and weight. this can cause excessive wear in the cylinder. the pisotn in the xr400 dirt bikes are butchered. they call them ring retainers not pistons. they are to be changed alot so they won't gernade. i would also only use the je piston for my rebuild. the wisecos are lighter but i have seen bad things from the wisecos. just my opinion.

Does your oil ever turn milky? If so, how many runs before you change?

FYI, With the fuel Injection system I have been running I have yet to see an oil anylasis come back showing the need to change the oil early. It never looks milky.

i haven't been running the alcohol very long, but when i changed it the oil looked perfect. no milk at all i was shocked. i was told that if your jetting is correct then it will not milk up. so far so good. i just change it alot because i ride in sand with an exposed air filter, no prefilter. trying to get as much air in there as i can you know.
