its been raining like crazy here in SE texas and all the tracks are always closed so i decided to build a ramp. Ill have some pics up withing a couple of days. Its not too high because we have to flatland it like hardcore riders do. Ill stick some approximate dimensions up here when i put the pics. (oh and....riding just cost me my girlfriend of 14 months. She says i put riding before her....i think im gonna start a new tread now that i think about it! could be interesting ) anyways check back for pix

as crappy as it looks, it actually worked great for just a weekend. we used logs to support it and it worked fine.

wood ramps are stupid, unsafe, and you barely get any air off them. i don't care what you guys say every ramp ive just seen on this page is a death trap.

real women use landings:blah:

j/k i dont use a landing for a jump on my track its about 4 feet high and 10 long i get some good air but the landing hurts really bad! i need more dirt for a landing im scared of it now

ben41884
08-08-2005, 01:51 AM
actually the landing isnt all that bad as long as i hit with the rear slightly first. oh and there's nothing wrong with a wooden ramp as long as it's built properly and checked prior to jumping it. as for not getting air, how does the material make you get less air than anything else??? im very satisfied with it but if it craters i'll let you know.

I keep wondering why you guys keep saying the landings gotta hurt.

That can't be that bad, yeah, its a decent amount of highth(sp? late) but still, not enough to hurt that bad.

He!!, I think i've landed flat from that highth on my Wolverine a time or two.....thats a little more harsh then a 450R though lol

I've done flat landings off 4 ft jumps, getting a good 6-7 feet of air. I landed slightly nose up, and when the back touched, I'd give it some gas, and it is smooth. Tears up the landing though.

im thinkin about putin a ramp in my back yard but for the landing how do you know ware to build it? like how far from the jump, im just afraid i would put it too far and case it. you think his flat landin is bad you should see my buddies jump he had one of those big metal barrels turned over with dirt piled on it he hits it 3rd gear pinned on his bear tracker :eek2: with no landing ramp. im waitin for it to snap in 2.

ben41884
08-08-2005, 03:50 PM
hey enduro...your best bet is probably to stand to the side and use your judgement on where you want to land it. Then after you figure that out, all you have to do is adjust your speed when you hit the ramp. If you have terrible judgement, then you may want to get a 2nd opinion!!! if it looks rediculous, it probably is! what are you going to make your ramp out of?

i flat landed at the track bout a month ago overshooting a tabletop. the take off was about 6-7 feet so i know i was at least 12 feet. the landing was pretty rough but luckily i just dislocated my shoulder. sooooo if your ramp is over 4 feet or so a landing is mucho criticalo.

ah you dont need a landing:blah: ,me and my father made a wooden jump down my local beach and i was getting some good air off it, about 6 foot high and 8-9 long, with no landing, as long as i took off in 2nd gear i was orite but if i pushed it to 3rd or 4th then it was dangerous. ill post some photos tomorrow, i cant find them but ill get them off my father's comp.:macho

peace

Would you guys think wooden ramps were a stupid idea if you had no access to a welder?

08-08-2005, 06:18 PM
how do you plan on welding the wood

Killa250ex
08-08-2005, 06:25 PM
Im not saying they would weld the wood, Im saying they would have no access to a welder, so they couldnt make a metal ramp, therefore build one outta what you got.

Im not here to argue tho, I would rather hit a metal ramp anyday, but if these guys think they made a safe ramp...let em hit it!

Juggalo
08-08-2005, 11:26 PM
if i had no access to a welder i would just make a ramp out of dirt instead of gay and unsafe wood. you barley get any air off those wussy wood jumps anyways so why put yourself in that danger when you could get the same amount or air safely with a dirt jump. get a couple buddies together with shovels and you can have a dirt ramp that size no problem!

wood ramps are like those stupid wings idiots put on their cars...they might try to argue that they serve a purpose but their really just pointless and make you look dumb

Juggalo
08-08-2005, 11:34 PM
oh and deal heres your pic. i saved it as the same name you sent it to me as: highjump.jpg haha..thats a pretty high jump eh?

08-08-2005, 11:50 PM
Im thinking of cutting my friends wood halfpipe in half then cutting the top off n using it as a kicker it has primer chit on it so it should last a bit longer but still not safe.. but seriously guys is anything to do with this sport safe???

ben41884
08-09-2005, 01:47 AM
hondamaniac, dont forget to let your buddy know that youre gonna chop his half pipe in half....BEFORE you do it. ohh and juggalo, the church that lets us ride in their field doesnt want us putting piles of dirt on their property. thanks for your care and concern but if we didnt build this wooden ramp, then we couldnt jump. so ill take my chances.

haha juggalo, um wooden jumps dont give you air :huh

wallaby_kid
11-15-2005, 01:45 PM
and thats just a little 'unsafe':o wooden ramp. imagine a BIG wooden ramp. mmm wait lets do the maths

more wood + good landing =bigger ramp

bigger ramp + me :D = ABSOLUTELY MASSIVE AIR :blah:

I built a ramp a couple of years ago and up until last summer it was sturdy as he11!! For those of you who say go build a dirt ramp, wood ramps are gay, and that they don't serve a purpose, I beg to differ. For those of us who don't feel like shoveling for hours on end and/or have no access to equipment such as a skid-steer, a ramp comes in pretty handy. I've hauled mine to several locations such as friends houses or old gravel pits and had fun. I don't want to argue w/ people, i'm just saying that if you don't like them, fine. Let those of us who do have our fun. What's it to you if WE get hurt? It's not your problem...

Anyways, my ramp was for bikes, but I plan to build another one similar but wider for both bikes and wheelers. If I won't get bashed for posting a couple bike pics, I'll post a few so you can see it. Not to brag but I would say that it is pretty nice for an afternoon's worth of work, and also at least as big, if not bigger, than any posted so far...I could give some dimensions out if anyone wanted them.

We had a little 4 ft wooden ramp it was fun to mess around on when you were bored, but I've got a metal ramp too so the wooden one didn't see much use. It broke a few months ago when I was hitting it, felt kinda like hitting a trampoline lol, luckily I didn't wreck.

Have any of you doubters ever heard of a "wooden" roller coaster. It's funny how these things last year after year while holding tons of weight.

Now I dont think some of the ramps on this thread are very safe, but if a wooden ramp is engineered and built correctly it should not only be safe but also last a long period of time.

As far as catching tiny airs, refer back to my original post and take note of the 50 footer:devil:
