Gearing cant give you both top and bottom.

Front:
Less Teeth = Lower
More Teeth = High

Rear:
Less Teeth = Higher
More Teeth = Lower

You use the ratios between the two to figure speed.

Say a 300ex has 13:38 gearing (stock), and the top speed is 55mph (for demonstration only).

You take the rear sprocket and divide it by the front.

38/13 = 2.9231

Higher number = Lower gearing & more bottom end oomph .
Lower number = Higher gearing & more top speed.

So putting a 12-tooth sprocket on the front gives you:
38/12 = 3.1667
(Stock/New) 2.9231/3.1667 = 0.9231 so your top speed will go from 55mph down to 51mph.
Therefore you have more bottom end oomph at the expense of top speed.

But of you were to go to a 14-tooth sprocket your ratio would be:
38/14 = 2.7143 aka.. more top end.
(Stock/New) 2.9231/2.7143 = 1.0769 so your top speed will go from 55mph up to 59mph but at the expense of bottom end oomph.

38/13 = 2.9231 is nearly the same as
35/12 = 2.9167 or
41/14 = 2.9286

It's not the size of them that matters; it's the ratio between the two.

I liked the 36/12setup on a stock 300ex w/ pipe/filter combo.
36/12 = 3.0000 gives a little more power but you only loose 2mph on the top. Then you can just swap the front sprocket back to the 13-tooth.. and you get a ratio of 36/13 = 2.7692 and you can get your top speed up to 58mph when you don’t need the low end grunt.

I have a 330 w/ a higher rev limit, 22" tires and a 14/36 gear ratio so my top speed is about 25% higher than a stock 300ex's.
