89 cdi on 86 250r

I just tried a 89 cdi box in my 86. It will run with the stock box but will not start will the new 89 box. Put the shock back in it will start. Is the a wiring differance. I have a ct 350 pv motor and a new stator for ricky stator. Can anyone shine some light on this. Am I missing somthing

If the 89 CDI is good it should work. I am running an 88 CDI on my 86 with no problems.
