I have a set of front rec tripple rate elkas for the 440ex. I have the softer springs on there now but would like to put the harder ones on, can i take the springs off myself... if so please explain how, thanks!

run the ride height collar all the way to the top of the shock then put the shock in vice upside down. push the bump stop down. then you and a freind grab the spring and compress it. once its compressed, take off the spring retainer

there's no need to put them in a vise. i took mine apart yesterday, and once you loosen the preload all the way, i could push the spring down far enough with one hand. just make sure you dont get the springs or crossovers mixed up
yaaaa!!! 900th post :p

will the spring retainer just twist off with your hand when no pressure is applied from the spring?

back off the preload adjusting ring
turn the shock upside down ( i usually place the top of the shock on a wooden bench)
pull down on the spring
once the spring is pulled down, remove the keeper.
you may need a buddy to help, but its usually not hard.

Most shops sell a shock compressing tool if you want to make it a bit easier . I know at work well sell the for like $15 .
