WELL, I'M OVER IN MESA AZ AND IF YOU DONT BUY IT, I WOULD BE INTERESTED IN IT... MY R WAS STOCK CYLINDER/PISTON WITH JUST PIPE, FILTER & RAD VALVE, AND I NEVER FOUND PIPED 400EXS THAT COULD TOUCH ME DOWN AT THE DUNES... THE 250R IS DEFINATELY A LOT FASTER... ALSO, THE 250R IS A VARY RELIABLE BIKE. UNTIL THIS YEAR MY BIKE STILL HAD THE ORIGINAL PISTON/CYLINDER AND RAN LIKE A CHAMP, I JUST NEEDED A LITTLE MORE SPEED. BUT IT IS 16 YEARS OLD AND HAD NEVER SEIZED OR BLOWN OR ANYTHING, AND I GOT A BUDDY WITH AN 88 WITH THE SAME THING. PARTS ARE EVERYWHERE- I HAVE NEVER HAD A PROBLEM FINDING PARTS... I DEFINATELY THINK YOU WOULD BE HAPPIER WITH THE R OVER THE EX, AND LIKE I SAID, IF YOU DONT BUY IT MAYBE I WILL...

250r's are one of the easiest quads to find parts for. Companies make everything for 250r's from chromoly drag frames to gears for the transmission. You can easily build a 250r from almost nothing but aftermarket parts.

TONS of parts are interchangeable. It's almost the same chasis. All the suspension will swap.

blownagent: The suspension is interchangable??????? If so that is great! Im like foxplayaforlife and want a 250r instead of my 400ex. I just barley spent 900 on suspension upgrades and if they will go on the 250r im set on buying one!!!!!!

Yes. My buddy put 400EX front shocks and a-arms on his 1986 TRX250R and I know some one else who put a 400EX swing arm on a 250R 3-wheeler. I'm not sure on things like the steering stem, tie rods and hubs but I guessing they will interchange as well. Think the hubs have different splines though. I'm sure someone else will know more about this.
When the 400 came out a lot of people called it a parts bin bike. It's pretty much a 250R with an XR400 motor, they didn't come up with anything new.

The front shocks are a direct bolt on but the rear shock has a few differences in the linkage bolt.Nothing that cant be took care of with bushings.I cant remember the specifics. The rear carriers are identical and the axles will swap but 400 axle has to have 400 hubs and R axle has to have R hubs.A arms can be made to work(the EX is narrower where they bolt to the frame,Again 1/8" spacer on each side of mount cures this).

Your dad needs a talking to. Around here R's are going for no less that 3500, and that is for a stock one. R's are alot faster than 400s. My bestfriends is a 265 and one of the guys that we ride with as a 440ex. Every time my bestfriend walks by him. Unless he uses his NOS, then he loses but not too bad.

i think the reason a lot of people think the 400 is faster is because they've raced a wore out 250R and a lot of them ive seen arent jetted right, then they wont open up and they foul plugs.

i know a stock 250R with a pipe will waste a 400ex. the 250R frame also has the best geometry of any stock quad ever made. the 400 frame is shorter but very well ballanced... just too short for my liking.

the 250R is reliable if you do the maintainace like re ringing the top end every year or 2. if you dont take care of them they might not last long. its all in how you ride it and how you take care of it.
