I've done about 2 hrs. of searching on oversized oil coolers and all that junk and i still don't know. I think im gonna just get another stock cooler and hook it up. Do i need to drill holes for that or can i just run a hose from one to the other then to my engine.

If you couldnt tell im very confused about this! I'm thinking i need a step by step guide on how to do this for dummies!

OR can i get a drop in oversized oil cooler that will work good.

Hey Crazy400EX,

Let me know what you find out, I have been wanting to do the same thing but I did not find anything on search.

rob-u/21,

I was looking for either a larger oil cooler that i could drop in in place of my stock one or getting another stock oil cooler and hooking that up too, so i had two oil coolers. My question is, if i get the extra cooler do i need to drill those holes in the valve cover and the other place or can i just connect the two coolers with hoses.

you should be able to connect the two. the oil should cool more before entering back into the engine with two coolers.

I have been wanting to change the stock oil cooler to a larger aftermarket cooler probably a permacool, but i was concerned that it would change the capacity of oil in the bike and i did not know how much so that has caused a delay.

I want to do something that i wont have to drill into my engine. Really cause im lazy and i dont want to take it appart again!

Chino886

I thought of buying the bigger oil cooler, filling it up with water, measuring it, the taking a secondary oil cooler, doing the same and figuring how much more oil I would need. The permacool oil cooler is only $75.

Crazy400EX

but the perma cool you have to drill dont you?

your engine that is

I was just going to use it as a replacement for the stock cooler.

07-21-2005, 08:59 AM
ooooooooooooooooooooh ya. See that was waht i was wondering if you could do. I think i might do that.....and in a little while if i want to use the stuff that comes with it and drill it out.

I wish someone would help us out with htis and tell us if it will work.

I am interested in this also.

I'm searching since two days for an answer... i can buy a second stock cooler for a cheap price... but i wanted to know if i can simply add it to the stock system. It seems that no one can help us there:(

But I think i'll buy some ''cpu like'' heatsinks and stick them or weld them on the oil tank... what do you think???

Hey guys, I did a little testing, and found out that the stock cooler recieves very little air flow, because of the nose on the front fenders. So I did something, to get more air through. i put a 60mm delta fan, that puts out 40 cfm, behind the cooler, and secured it through the fins of the cooler. I hooked it up to the ignition. It puts out A LOT of heat. You can feel it on you leg! Also, I've bought a 85 cfm Tornado fan, forgot the brand, and I am going to stick it in front. It should keep m,y motor much cooler. LMK if you need pics.

Hey dude, you make may wonder one thing, where the oil cooler is placed, it dont have much air that flow in it... so my idea is to relocate it a little more lower and more to the front with your mod.... sounds great??? or not... will it work...

And post me some pictures!!!!!!!!!! It is really appreciated.

Yeah, I was planning on moving it lower, But I still wanted cool airflow to my motor, so I decided to just put the fan on the cooler. Hopefully, 125 cfm of air!!!, will be enough to keep it cool in 100+ weather.

You have a 2005. Is the nose higher? I would believe it is.

Yea i've one in my 400 ex it's a pingre I love it :D yes you can get a bolt up aftermarket and drop it in you may have to remove your exhaust exspecialy if its after market the header pipe will be in the way buts thats no big deal. O buy the way i do need a carb what do you have?

ill answer as best as i can.
you can hook the second oil cooler up inline with the other one but others have said it wont really drop the temps a whole lot. others have said "buy a 4" x 4" transmission cooler and replace your stock one with it." Your probly better off buying an oversized oil tank and cooler though. more expensive but its proven to work best, if you want to help drop the temps a little bit put on some air scoops. it will direct more air to the oil cooler and the motor. should help cool the engine some. PLKMONSTER2- i like that idea, ive often wondered about it. but is it safe for your stator, and what about when your riding thru muddy areas, is it safe for out door use? sounds like it would help out alot with cooling.

I just went to an auto part store and i saw an oil transmission cooler at 50$us, it is the size of a foreman 450 oil cooler... but a little bigger by one stage and it look more beefy...

but if I change the oil cooler to this one, I think the changes will be minimal according to your answers, but a saw a bigger one that take all the place and fit right in between upper frame and the oil tank... But still the pressure and oil flow will be the same?????:ermm:

And yes the nose is a little bit higher because the older nose go a little down... about 5 cm

yeah, id be afraid of loosing oil pressure by going to big on the oil cooler.

desert toyz used to make a larger cooler that looked like the stock one and mounted in place of the stock one but was like 2 times bigger. I was interested in it but never really looked into it.

I have a friend who has been using a transmission oil cooler for a long time and it's worked great, I recommend this for anyone instead of paying $75-$100 for a cooler that is nothing more than a $40 transmssion oil cooler. Just track down the parts and install it the same way as the four stroke tech kit because that's all they are selling is an automotive cooler.

It's a brushless fan, so water shouldn't hurt it. It seemed to work just fine running it along with my lights. It only pulls 6 watts. My larger one will pull 9-10.

umm I dont know what else to say.... its like an extra 1/2 quart, just guessing, this also helps, its similar to running a about 1/2 quart larger oil tank, and cools much better too. The whole setup took like 2 hours to fab up. Total cost was like... 50$. I am a big motor head and I am used to doing things like this so it might take others longer.. Let me know if anyone has any other questions. Also only extra brackets I had to make was 2 brackets from the a-arm bolts up to the cooler as shown in my gallery.-darren

You can go with the larger stock cooler (or two plumbed together), but a lot of the effect will be negated as the oil then runs through the hot oil filter housing and up the passage in the side of the cylinder. In my opinion, the extra effort involved in the FST-style cooler is worth it. A decent machinist should have no problem installing the fittings, and you can purchase the cooler kit through PermaCool (Universal ATV Cooler Kit, P/N 1008). You can also buy the kit from FST, but it's essentially the same (except for the "turbulator" fins inside the cooler tubing which are supposed to dissipate heat better). This style bypasses the cylinder passage and cools the oil right before it reaches the valve train. PM me if you'd like detailed instructions and/or pictures of the finished product. The Dezert Toyz cooler is way expensive; you'd be better off plumbing two stock coolers together if you decide to go that route.

yeah but the desert toyz cooler bolts right up to the stock location. use that with a fst cooler and be running way cooler without a bunch of stuff hanging

Just go to the junk yard and find a transmission cooler of a truck and hook it up. I would also suggest mounting it up on the front frame rails.

thank for replyes... i am working on a powerful blower to cool down the oil cooler, it's 12v i found this on my vw golf, it is a blower that pull air into head for anti-pollution. So i saw this thing blow off like a shopvac... amd it's 12v.

Upside down... I thing you shouldn't mess with gravity. That's a personnal opinion.

Check the amps... More amps=more power drawn=overloaded stator=blown stator. You can run like 5 amps without lights safely.

ive been thinking about doing a fan too but i cant find any does anyone know a good fan that wont break in the water and mud and etc..that also will work on the stock stator...

shouldn't matter how the hoses are hooked up because oil is being pumped through the lines.

Well, I don't have a 400ex but I do have a warrior. I put an oil cooler on it by taping into the clutch cover. The cooler (only the fins) is about 5.5-6" long and 3.5-4" wide. It is a transmission cooler like what you would find at PepBoys, Kregen, or Autozone. I have it mounted just behind the front bumper on the frame rails leading up to the lights. It is also the type of cooler that has the tubes instead of the style found on the EX which means there is very minimal pressure drop.

When I put it on I tested the pressure and oil speed by cracking the oil bleeder screw. Then started it and the thing had great oil pressure and speed to the head, the same as stock. I have had it on my warrior going on 45 hours now without a problem.

I had a high output computer fan running behind the cooler for a while, it worked really really good until I crossed too many streams and washed it a few times. But if you ride only trails or dunes, it would have worked *****in. I hooked it to a manual switch and then to my battery.
