i hate the 05 plastics they need to make plastic styles an option from the dealer, the new style doent really look good on the 450 and it looks even worse on the 400

any 400ex, 99-05, these people are just mad or something because they dont have reverse, or are in denile about something, im sick of hearing of the 99-04 is so much better, its the same machine.. so anyways, whichever one the price is right on, if u like reverse or just want the option and have the $$, def. get 05, but if your looking for a deal find any year, engine and egros or w/e are exactly the same except reverse and a smaller front sproket on the 05..

Why would I want 11 extra pounds on my quad?

Most of the posts I have seen we're people saying 05's are better and then owners of 99-04 EX's defending themselfs.

BTW, I like the look of the 99-04 EX's much better....who wants a 450r look-a-like. If I wanted something that looked like a 450r, I'd get a 450r, not a 400ex.

Well said! Honda went down a notch in my book for that look-a-like marketing crap. As you can see it has paid off well for them.

I do agree they should have kept it the same. but who cares if it does, if you have an 99-04, you are ok and dont have to worry about getting confused with riding a 450r. Also, i think they made it look the same and gave it reverse is because it is no longer a race quad, just a everyday person trail bike for the most part. and a person who is just buying a new quad for the 1st time will think the 05 looks better, im not saying it does, but for Joe Shmo who never has rode b4 will think it looks awsome. also 11lbs, yea make a huge difference, NOT, even with a smaller front sproket i still am faster topend then my friends 04' with basicly the same mods with exception of jetting which mine has.. and i weight more..

Are you saying he hasn't rejetted or he has differnet jetting?

If he hasn't rejetted, theres your reason. But if he did change the jetting and its good, theres nothing really to say unless your a better rider, and that not all motors make the same power. You take 1 05 motor and another 05 motor, one will make more power then the other. May not be noticeable at all, and it probably won't be that much, but it'll still be there.

BTW, stop trying to make it sound like 05's are better...which you are.

99-04 ex. I Hate the new one it ugly as hell and I think it is stupid to have reverse on a sportbike unless its for a newbie or old man. I dont understand why people buy the 400ex still when there such better quads out now?

400ex is the only one I have ever ridden, and I never even rode it stock. So I can't really say. But just one suggestion, put this in the open section, or some other place than the 400ex section. How many z or kfx owners hang out in this section? You know what answer you are going to get here.

i do agree it isnt the best looking quad out their the 05 that is they probably shoulda of stayed with its old style cuz you can't find many graphics for the new one but you can't be hating on the reverse all the old 400ex riders r jus mad cuz they don't have it on their bikes its a great thing to have actually if it is 11 pounds more nothing againist you guys but i think if the older bikes had it you wouldn't be hating on it and it isnt a must but its nice to have

As far as reverse... I am a newbie, (to quads) and at 44, to most of you guys here, I am an old man. So I will take one with reverse, thank you.

i just got an 05 and i like it alot. never owned a quad before, besides another 2005 250ex, so i really have nothing to compare it to.

But what do you expect, all the people with pre 05 quads like that styling better and all the people with the 05 like that one better.

I had my choice of both off the show room floor, and i chose the 05, i PERSONALLY like the front end of it, the bug eyes didnt really do much for me, reminded me of some other brand of quad from back in the day.

but ither way, their both nice machines..

I personally do not think reverse is needed, but it was in Honda's best interest to add reverse to the 400. Even though I don't like reverse I think it should have been added.

All these people saying that the older ex owners are just jealous that you have reverse are being a little rediculous. Why I am mad about the 05's is that they changed the look of it. I could care less that they added reverse, except that maybe more people will buy them because of it, which is good for honda. I just dont like them taking after yamaha.

All of honda's quads had a unique style, and they took that away. Hopefully they dont change all their quads to look like the 450. The 450 looks nice, but when it has its own style, I think it looks better. my .02

All they did to the body was add a 450R style headlight. The plastics are the same as the older 400's. All you have to do is take a 99-04, cut the headlight off and add the 05 hood. Then fenders still look the say as they always did. They look nothing like the 450R fenders.

I would say the 400ex also. It is really reliable. now that I got my 440 kit on it, and the fmf pipe and all my other mods, no 450 or anything can touch me, cept for maybe a banshee.

When i got my 05 i had the chioce between it and a new 04. I got the 05 cause i like the looks and being new to guads i liked the reverse. I think the front end looks meaner on the 05s.

lol, tell us another one. I highly doubt you can hang with a piped and cammed 450R. If so, you have the baddest 400EX I have ever heard of, and props for that.

the 99-04's look way better and an extra 11 lbs is no good. also compare prices you can get a nice 99 or 00 for around 2200 bucks. for the same price as a new one you could get a 99 or 00 and pipe it and 440 it etc and have a nice n fast EX

I think that honda should let people choose what plastics go on their machine sort of like color. Also they should have reverse as an option.

(I am thinking positive) and they should let people choose between standard front shocks and fully adjustable /w piggy backs.

Well, hear this, a stock 05 400ex goes 55.9mph and a trx450r goes approx. 70-75mph... so, the 450r will prolly whoop the ex pretty good tho.

dude are u crazy..... 55.9:ermm: ...... the 99-04 average top speed wus 68-71 mph ive read all kinda studies on it and those were the average speeds(stock)..... the 05 is geared a lil bit differently, but im pretty sure its in the 67-70 mph range stock

and 450r's top out at 79 thats what i've read and my buddy's (stock) along side a car did exactly 79 mph
