my gas tank looks horrible on my 450r, its the stock black one after the season is done i am going to get all new plastic and graphics for it but in mean time what can i do about the tank? is there any type of sanding techniques i could use to buff out the scratches?

get some like 120 grit sand paper and take out all the rough spots, then mone to finer and finer paper untill your using steel whool then make sure you dont have any gas in the tank and use a heat gun to met the top layer of plastic and make it smooth again btw this works on fenders too

buffing compound and a buffing wheel will work way better

You mean more like 1200 grit not 120.
